So two years ago I started to toy with the idea of drawing D as if I were designing her today.
The tough part is trying to ignore the original design and draw D as if she were a new character.... I was terribly unhappy with my initial attempt and just set it aside. I do not like the colors I chose for the previous design, especially her natural markings mostly especially on her legs where the placement just makes it slightly unbalanced. There are some issues with my current version too, I realize now that some of her colors are too close and blend together.
Technically, I still did more of a redesign of her old look than the intended "what if I were making her today", but I'm fairly happy with the result this time.
Note that this is NOT D's new design, just an idea.
Also
fuzzy-britches did a very cute version of D when I first talked about this idea

As someone who's been drawing D for years now I'd just like to say that I always loved her 2011 design. It was the version I was drawing for the longest time and was going to use for my comic before I stopped doing it (sorry she never made it in... maybe I could put her in my new comic somewhere!) It wasn't until about 2 years ago that I started drawing her 2013 redesign, not that it's bad by any means, I'd just always forget about the stitching locations and chopped off ear. The 2018 design doesn't look too bad, but I will say that it looks more like a daughter or clone of D instead of the actual version. This most recent design doesn't look bad either although of course I'll always be nostalgic for her original design. But as you said, it's just a concept.
You posed a very interesting question though which I've never thought of even once; "What would our sonas look like if we didn't have any and were creating one from scratch NOW." That's a good ass question. Wolf was created by teenage, Hot Topic, edgelord Me back in 2006. I now wonder what could have been. Here's an idea for ya, maybe make a bunch of D clones that were also failed zombie experiments? Ya know just go nuts. Maybe go crazy overboard with the stitching all over her body? Whatever you go with though, I'm sure it'll be great.
