Figuring out this wire method took a bit of experimentation. I managed it by joining all the parts into one base mesh and assigning it just a plain white matte material. Then I duplicated that mesh for the wire material. Enable Z transparency on the wire material and then search for the Z offset in the material settings (called "zoffs" in 2.49 and below), and up that to 0.1 or so. This will force the wire material to be on top of other materials that share the same plane.
Note that increasing the Z offset too much will produce errors, so keep it as small as possible.
