before the Hearts fall pawn (same as the most of royal offspring) used to spend it's time dreaming about overthrowing the King
that's just something that's in their blood i guess
(also demon don't have any parental instincts and other than disgust for the freshly laid eggs/larvae nothing stops them from killing/consuming them,,
castle caves have several growing hot spring chambers to supply fresh food and keep their blood relatively clean
once larvae are old enough to develop lungs they start to crawl out of the caves and the luckiest ones are even able to leave the castle)
