I first heard the term in a Monty Python sketch ages ago, the one where the secret agent was "dressed as a dog." Of course they used a real dog. Just before he got to telling his contact some vital information, he said, "I...I...I gotta go walkies."
So since then we used the term "walkies" with all our dogs.
