You two do know what it means for there to be a "Vacuum" in space, right? One hole in that suit and either he blows up like a balloon or gets sucked out through the hole. Or both.
Come to think of it... [spoiler]The robot shouldn't be smoking, or exploding... There's no air pressure (oxygen) in space for there to be a fire. Though there could have been enough inside the robot to allow for it. Plus it's a common troupe so I guess we can lat it slide.[/spoilers]

That's honestly not correct. There have been incidents on space walks of suit tears -- including one where the astronaut's glove tore. Suits are often multi-layered though. I would expect that more futuristic suits would be even more resilient as things like micro meteors pose a legitimate and deadly threat to anyone in space.
Also... cartoon logic. This is more in the vein of Star Wars and Star Trek than Gravity or The Martian.

Well, obviously, but people are suggesting that he gets physically hurt by things such as shrapnel. Thus it's understood that it goes through all of the layers. Although, now that you mention it, they probably made a suit that is able to "patch itself up" temporarily in cases of sudden tears. Kind of like "anti-flat tires" from the 2004 movie Taxi.
So in theory, we could have the best of both worlds. Even so, I doubt you'll kill him off in that way. Even so (for lack of better words), I'll still hold my breath (no pun intended).

How about an Arnald Schwarzenegger impression?
