And if stomping around in the hills in lovely weather wasn't enough, I also found I REALLY enjoy hitting things with a hammer. Especially if they shatter with that satisfying "crunch" noise.

were that so, the arrow would have penetrated on either an upwards trajectory (firing up from the ground)
or a descending trajectory, (on it was down after reaching it's highest point)
Neither is correct. It was level, parallel to the ground, and was therefore fired from an equal altitude, from rather far off. And yes, I was there and spotted it.

I was just suggesting that it could have struck the tree while it was in that in-between zone of a trajectory shot..where the arrow had finished it's upward flight and was starting to level off before it's descent. Just sayin', y'know? Since arrows don't have quite as long a level-flight path as bullets. So unless there was something nearby that someone could have made the shot from at that height.
Could be happenstance, or it could be someone trying to fuck with the minds of anyone looking up at that tree, we'll never know for sure. It is a mystery :o

I was not trying to shout you down. Merely to illucidate.
The period of flight you describe would be the apogee.
It was merely odd that it was sticking straight out of the Saguaro, parallel to the ground.
I suspect it was fired from a fair distance away, by a fairly powerful compound bow. Their trajectories are very straight for quite a distance.

Longbows were the snipers and artillery of the middle ages.
A modern compound bow would have delighted and scared the shit out of many folks back then.
They (compound bows) are as efficiant as a non-chemical projectile can be. Some of the newer bows would shatter a wooden arrow upon firing, due to the massive accelleration.

Fully understood. Decent rock hammers ain't cheap. Probably the best place to find one cheap would be a flea market, very soon after they open. I don't know about Karno, but personally, I detest getting up that early. Though I will do it when it's necessary.
I used to live in Tucson, while I attended the UofA, far too long ago. I did my fair share of fossil hunting back then, too. My best friend was a palaeontology student.

Argh. One thing that always upsets me when I meet a foreign immigrant living in Arizona is the knowledge that they will probably never sample America's Birch Beer technology. It's a much more popular drink on the east coast of the US.
Also, I theorize that the arrow is decades old and entered the cactus when it was just man-high. That;s right, it's an ancient lightweight fiberglass arrow with plastic fetching.

that's it.... that's the last straw!
bad enough I'm jealous of your collection of firearms and ability to go shooting.... now you add fossil hunting to the list.... what's next? cave exploration and gem collecting?!
sheesh.... i swear.... this is partly why I hate living in San Francisco....
where do you live and how do i get there?!

you can say that again although i think it's better not to... and if I went i could help identify the gems or fossils... maybe even craft jewelry and such to wear or sell... a hobby of mine along side the guns.... my grandfather has an M1 and a M1 Carbine.... both of which I wish I could shoot....... i seriously wished I lived out toward the open country area...
Ya gots ta save up some moolah, and GTFO of Cali.
I was a year older than you when they banned all the stuff I enjoyed, so I beat feet to Arizona.
I was originally from L.A. I love the Bay Area, but there is no way in HELL I would ever live there.
Save yer scheckles and make some friends out here so you have a place to crash until you find a job, apartment, etc.
