I drew it because it looked better than showing her with an "exposed" crotch area, like Fred's got. They would have looked like mirror images then. She's untrained and not confident, so her body language is going to be all about being protected and closed. They're not fencing. They're fighting with swords. Style has no relevance in this sort of duel.
And I dunno what I did wrong--I think she looks great. It's Fred who looks stupid to me.

while LARPing I fought with my boffer the way I'd wield a real sword, I rarely got hit, because I did a lot of blocking and backing off. 99% of the hits they DID land would have rolled off my armor, but Not In The Game.
she's not playing a game, defense keeps you alive, offense ends the fight. but you Will DIE without Both.
she has a lot to learn. with the skill differential between them Fred looks fine, he know beyond a reasonable doubt that he's FAR more skilled than she is.

I can't say I see anything wrong with how she's standing. The sword hardly looks big enough to make a two-handed grip necessary, but her posture for the grip used is good enough. Bit too hunched forward, perhaps. No shields in use, so makes sense she has her dominant side more towards her opponent - weapon's further out that way.
