I got the Dik-dik and Kirby all molded up, but ran into a snag once I pulled Kirby out of the mold: It seems the Sculpey had some small pockets of air in it when I baked it and so when I put it under pressure during the molding process it collapsed those air pockets. This means that the mold I made has divots in the head, as does the Kirby master sculpt. $#(&*@&^!! Now I need to make a cast using the divoted mold, fill in those divots, then sand and finish that cast to make a new master, sans air pockets this time. Then I can make a mold of the new master which will hopefully look much better. Fek... Additional image of the molds in the process, Kirby at left, under-filled Dik-dik at right. I under-filled the Dik-dik the first (and second!!) time and had to mix more to finish filling it.

That's a huge bummer. I couldn't have imagined sculpey doing the cavitation thing, I thought that was reserved for silicone. I wonder if tamiya primer softens the surface of cured polymer clay, a quick googling suggests any spray lacquer has the potential to. Gesso works okay as a primer but most of the sanding is just to remove the brush strokes you unintentionally added applying the gesso. What material do you plan to fill and repair with?
Nope, nope, this isn't the fault of the materials, it's all on me. When I sculpt I do two things that can trap air bubbles, both are common to do when sculpting. The first being to soften/condition my clay using a "pasta" roller. This means that when I roll out the clay, fold it, then roll it again, that can trap air bubbles in the clay sometimes. Also when I sculpt I use loop tools to carve out and shave off bits, then I take those leftover bits and ball them up, little bits of air can get trapped in the clay. It usually isn't an issue, but it seems this time it was. Damn.
Ahh, I loves me some conditioning. My poor pasta maker is sounding pretty sickly these days, it has been abused much.
The sculpey company isn't helping us by selling 1lb bricks made of a bunch of extruded round tubes with air inbetween. I even find air pockets in their premo bricks.
