''February 14th, 2010 marked the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Tiger."
With the Year of the Tiger has come a massive effort from wildlife associations and charities to push for the protection of tigers.
In the span of 100 years, the tiger population has declined from 100,000 to less than 3200 tigers left in the wild. Tigers originally had 9 sub-species, there are now only 5, with the last Indochinese tiger in China being killed and eaten this month.
This month’s comic is late and not what I promised it would be. I am sorry for this but recent article have spurred me to at least try and help in any way I can.
The article that led me to do more research some of you may have already read about tiger wine in China: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art.....85-wine.html
There are legal loop holes that allow these tiger Farms to use the dead carcasses of their tigers for purported medicinal purposes. Those living at these farms are not well taken care of with tigers suffering from neglect like starvation, poor enclosures, and genetic defects from excessive inbreeding. Tiger Farms say that if they use their tiger parts for medicinal purposes it will reduce the risk of poachers to wild tigers and as such, they are pressuring the Chinese government to lift the ban on tiger products which has protected wild tigers for 17 years. The claims of these farmers are far from the truth. It costs thousands to keep a tiger in captivity, whereas tigers in the wild can be killed for as little as $1. By lifting the ban, these farmers will have given poachers greater opportunities to sell dead tigers and wild populations would soon go extinct.
It is sad to think there are more tigers in captivity in Florida than there are in the wild in India. What is even worse is that captive-bred tigers cannot be released into the wild as they do not know how to hunt and are often mixed subspecies and heavily inbred. This leads to another upsetting topic of the white tiger. The white tiger is not a subspecies of tiger at all, it is a genetic defect. White tigers are used as tourist attractions and are bred for that reason only. White tigers are often born with defects such as immune deficiency, scoliosis of the spine, cleft palates, mental impairments and many of them are cross-eyed. Because of all their health problems 80% of them die very young. It is all a very cruel deception to the general public for their entertainment.
All captive born tigers that have been released into the wild have died. Consequently, if all wild tigers are killed, it will be the end of wild tigers.
However there is a chance to change this. Tigers breed like cats, meaning if given the chance it is quite possible to save these creatures from extinction, if given the chance. It is not just tiger trafficking that's the problem but also the loss of their habitat. Tiger cubs can stay with their mother well over 2 years before it needs to find its own territory, and some litters can be as large as 7. So it's important that they are given the protection from their mothers up until they are ready for their own territory and move away from mum. Tiger habitat is lost due to numerous reasons, people and livestock moving in, deforestation from agriculture etc. People moving in on tiger territory also increases the risk of tiger attacks, which can end in death of livestock or people, which in turn leads into people hunting the tiger for 'retribution'.
As a kid I knew tigers were endangered, as much as I wanted to do something about it, I didn't know how. I thought I was too young and too small, and that by the time I was an adult someone would have stopped the massacre. 10 years later, nothing has changed.
Therefore, I am making a start to try and help in any way I can. The most logical way to start is by grabbing your attention with my art! Did I succeed? Good! Here's how you can help save not just the tigers, but any creature you believe is worth saving!
1 – Learn! - Research is very easy with internet broadband and a simple 15 – 30 minutes of idle browsing will dig up hundreds of websites dedicated to protecting our planet earth. Educate yourself with this knowledge.
2 – Apply! - You can apply the knowledge you have learnt by spreading the word. Just by talking about what’s going on can encourage other people to research for themselves or even do more! You can also volunteer for non-profit organizations. Also, volunteering doesn't have to be about rolling around in the dust with creatures great and small. Volunteering can be as basic as supplying your web, photography, art, writing, vocal skills in order to support and help out charities and funds. So check out charities you trust in and sign up on their volunteer forms!
3- Act! - Stay Informed, donate to charities, and volunteer. Do whatever it takes. So many people I see every day and talk about with on these topics go ''aw that's sad, but there's nothing I can do about it.'' Wrong! People have made a difference and every single person affects the final outcome. Even if all you do is write in a letter to the government to make sure they do not support poaching, or donate a few bucks every now and then. It will make a difference. If you say you are going to do something, or that you want to do something, then do it. Nothing can stop you. ''
Prints of these images will be available at my table at Furnal Equinox this weekend. If you buy prints of the comic 100% of the profit will go to www.SavetheTigerfund.org. If you buy any other tiger related item on my table $1 will go to the fund as well. There will also be a donation jar there on my table for people who do not want to buy anything, but want to help.

Unfortunately there are people out there who do the horrible jobs such as selling tiger parts, selling shark fins, stuffing those poor little hermit crab in gaudy shells. However most of them have no choice as it is the only paying job they get, and their 'Boss' is more to blame.
However with enough pressure from the general public across the world things can change, and they will be better for everyone.

The best way to solve this is of course to educate the young.
Teach them small so when they get big they arent a danger.
All animals that belong in the wild also should -never- be pets, fennecs, wolves, foxes, bears, tigers, lions ect, anything that is perfectly able to kill a human being or not, should never be a pet or an article of clothing or even a trophy.

I agree, although I can understand the 'cute' factor. I wouldn't want an exotic pet just because of them being cute. They are high maintenance and expensive... and it makes me really upset when there are plenty of animals in animal shelters who have been dumped there because the owner found out they were high maintenance and expensive :(
Don't get an exotic pet! Get a rescue pet! They deserve a happy home!

I once had found a baby crow on the side of a road, she was sevearly hurt on her side, I took her in and took care of her until she was strong enough to run around and kind of fly around my house, but crows also count as exotic, They ALWAYS beg you for food and they poo all in you're house....and it -smells-, it was hard for me to release her, but if you truely love something, release it and preserve it in memory, there are plenty of domestic animals that go on withought families.
Also don't take in any wild baby birds, immediatly take them to any wildlife shelter and allow the experts to care for them so they are not humanized.

sad little comic story, but oh so true, alas.
in Siberia the rangers there are undermanned, but at least they are equipped well enough to shoot back, unlike african and indian rangers trying desperately to preserve wildlife. I have seen a documentary on german TV about russian efforts to preserve the biggest cat on earth, and at least they are slowly making a difference. but way too often all they can do is burning furs and bones and other stuffs hunters get out of their chore, to cut into their profit.
but as you say, it's not that much the hunters to blame, but also merchants. and, even more so, the people buying the products. without their dollars there wouldn't be any market.
I sincerely hop the chinese government doesn't lift that ban. they're doing so many things wrong, they must get something right for once... before the populace starts to kill corrupt politicians in larger quantities then but one mayor.

habitat loss is the biggest threat to ALL species, everywhere. and it's pretty much do to the combination of humans being too fertile for the increase in life span modern medicine has made possible, and certain aspects of the way dominant cultures, have, mostly in just the last hundred years or so, gotten used to doing things.
