Learning about the Cerean people has been a great experience for both Necro and Saros. Especially since they get an upclose and personal tour of them from Dr. Kalthias.
tl;dr - Cereans have tattoos that are a bit different from the traditional ink tattoos most humans know of. Their people use hypertrophic scarring to create the designs and then fill them in with colorful inks. Much like most hypertrophic scar designs, their tattoos usually hold cultural significance such as rank, social standing and other points of honor. Kal's favorite tattoo and point of pride is the Crooked Cross like symbol that is a human astrological representation of Ceres, the research vessel/dwarf planet that he has the honor of serving on.

One night, while discussing various traditions that are shared by both Humans and Cereans, Kalthias asks about the scars that adorn both Saros and Necro's faces. Necro sheepishly and regretfully mentions that his is the only facial wound that didn't heal from the damage done to his ship during Battle Run after they collided with a Colteron ship and he lost his little brother and navigator. He quickly assures them to continue the conversation and Saros replies that his scar was more intentional. He was cut with a small butterfly knife that the fighter kept on hand and then stared him down. He wanted the fighter to admit to their alien partner where the scar came from and it's purpose. Again, he replied sheepishly, though the regret was far more clear.
"I had intended to appear crazy and evil and vile and mean once everyone labeled me that way. I started 'marking' my navigators with small, thin scars to claim them as my property ... this used to work well, but unfortunately ... it then started to back fire that anyone I had 'marked' would end up getting more attention instead of less to try and help them cope with being stuck with me."
After a few moments of silence, and a hug from both men, they conversation continued. Kalthias discussed how some humans do scar themselves or others for a purpose, and mentioned such that was basically a tattoo that was done with the natural healing process of the human body instead of ink. The base scars, hypertrophic scars, are often used to make patterns and designs in the skin. While neither of them had a hypertrophic scarring (or Keloid scars), they did serve a similar purpose as hypertrophic designs did. He added then that he also knew humans to inject their skin with inks to create flatter, colorful patterns (normal tattoos) that tended to be the same texture/shape/level as their skin. Both humans nodded, and gave the alien a quizzical look, not sure why he was making the comparison between ink and scar tattoos.
It was then the doctor smiled and unzipped his jumpsuit and pulled it free of his arms and chest, letting the top half sit around his waist like a skirt. He showed off the tattoo on his arm. While it was inked, it also had the same raised scar appearance of a hypertrophic scar design. He explained that while humans usually did either/or, his people typically did their tattooing as such. They would start by creating whatever patterns they wanted/needed with hypertrophic scarring. Then, sometimes after fully healed - sometimes slightly prior to healing completion, the scars would be filled in with color to create both a raised and inked design. He sat between them then and let them touch his tattoo and feel it. Necro remarked that despite the many times they'd seen him shirtless and even naked, they never noticed the tattoo before. He admitted that he usually used his disguise device to camoflague the design. Necro asked if he was ashamed of it -which he felt a logical question due to the other hiding it- and suggested that maybe what looked like abstract symbols was perhaps like a human getting a naked woman tattooed on their arms. Saros rolled his eyes, and Kalthias would laugh, assuring him that, no, the reason he kept it covered was just because he was unsure how humans would react to it, and that on occassion he would be in the same state of undress as he was now, and didn't want it to interfere with his doing work at all. He went on to explain that much like the human scar tattooing, Cereans had tattoos that generally held meaning and were more status symbol than pure decoration.
He proceeded to explain what each portion of his meant, starting from the very bottom and heading toward the top. Finally he landed on the very human, astrological symbol. "And this, is the symbol your people labeled our ship. Ceres." He beamed with pride," This, is a point of honor. To be on this research vessel, to be approved to be here. Only the best of the best are allowed here. So this, is my biggest and most important tattoo." He was relieved that the reaction from the humans was finding his pride in that part of his tattoo simply adorable.
