Commission for
Tree-san. I really wanted to capture the feeling of a couple of friends walking home from a New Years festival, all decked out in fancy winter kimonos and still carrying some sweets from the booths. I really like the pieces that feel like private moments that are part of someone's story. They're some of my favorite things to draw.
Background was originally a (daytime) photo I took in the Japanese Friendship Garden in Idaho Falls, Idaho late last year. Had to do a lot of tweaking to remove some of the more obviously not-Japanese bits from the photo (like the LDS temple that was originally peeking through the trees) but I'm pretty pleased with the results!

That was a deliberate choice because
Tree-san wanted the rich colors in the kimonos showcased. I drew the characters in a pool of light like there's a street lamp flooding the area of the park they're walking through. Since I was starting with a photo I took during the daytime, striking a balance that preserved the details I wanted to keep while trying to transform it into night wasn't easy, so I went for what the commissioner wanted rather than worrying too much about realism.

...Okay, before you go any further, I need you to understand that your whole line of commentary is a REALLY RUDE thing to say on someone's commission. You need to stop doing this.
I was trying to be neutral and explain the process that lead to the piece looking the way it does and not rip into you. It was NOT an invitation to do the wink-wink-nudge-nudge "oh we just humor our commissioners" thing. I care immensely that the art I draw for the person paying me ends up looking the way they want it to look. Tree expressed concerns that the colors wouldn't show up in a night scene, so I adapted things to make sure they would, and I like how it turned out.
Don't critique other people's commissions, period. You don't have to like or agree with their choices, but it costs you nothing to accept it isn't the way you would have done it, and move on. When you're the one paying for the piece, you get to call the shots. Otherwise nope. Don't do it.
