Originally a slave owned by bad humans, he was captured during a human/monster battle. The monster king and queen were going to put him in the dungeon but decided against it when they saw how badly he had been treated by the humans. He was made the squire of Sir Goren, their best knight, to which he really felt like they were being too kind. As Goren's squire, Don has to train each day to be knight by sparring, racing, practicing archery, and preparing food for others. Donovan, of course, goes overboard trying to do things perfectly (to the point of self-harm sometimes), much to Goren's concern.
Secretly, he fell in love w/ Goren at first site. Every touch and conversation they have gives Don butterflies each time (especially hugs).
Donovan also gets terrible nightmares each night. Sometimes, he's being chased by a demonic monster and he wakes up in a cold sweat afterwards. Other times, he's watching that same monster burning down a city w/ magic flames, cackling maniacally as the flames extinguish the lives of those they catch and, scarily enough, this monster and these dreams are oddly familiar to Don. After many nights of these nightmares occurring, Goren chose to let Donovan sleep w/ him in his bed. Don was hesitant at first, but he obliged and while his nights still suck, he at least has wonderful Sir Goren to comfort him.
Magic:
While normally, Don can only do things a normal human can do, when he's overly stressed or, rarely, angry, his eyes become black and red, his hair turns jet black, and he starts shooting off powerful magic attacks uncontrollably and can even levitate people, objects, and make holes in the Earth. While Goren can calm him down, each time is very difficult as even Goren can't do much against Don in this state and all he can do is try to use his words. Don can also summon evil looking scythes.

IMPORTANT FACT 1: Humans in this world can't use magic, so the fact that Don can is quite suspicious.
IMPORTANT FACT 2: King Harold and Queen Isabelle own an urn full of black dust that was important to an ancestor of Harold's and the dust was a monster that caused a great tragedy that caused the monster/human war. When Donovan is near it, it feels weirdly familiar to him and a voice in his head always compels him to touch it, even though he refuses.
IMPORTANT FACT 3: Ever since he was 10, Donovan has had a dark voice in his head that constantly belittles him and urges him to kill. The belittling he doesn't mind but the killing part is what he always refuses.
