More images and thoughts from the Andur dreamscape. Now if you ask any fennec in the modern world if they are a fox and they will say "yes" they are a type of fox. In 14th century Andur this is not an accepted fact.
In fact ask any fennec you might run into in the Sultan's city whether they are a fox and you'll get some variation of the three responses given here. To the best of my knowledge they must have held a convention in the past and passed a resolution on the subject!
The little fellow with the stick is a regular at
Tom_Clowder villa http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3085747/ . He seems to be a rather unflappable and conducts much of his exploration of the world by poking it with a stick. Not maliciously but with that curious "What is this?" sense of discovery.
Now the due to the upcoming war with the Caliphate of Baghdad a multitude of different cultures and people that usually don't come into contact much with each other are facing a common enemy. The elephants being an example http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2122789/. This has resulted in some unusual mixes in the Sultan's army.
The fennecs for the most part are throwing their weight behind the Sultan and have been volunteering as skirmishers and scouts for the Andurian Army. They are excellent slingers and due to their herder culture they are good trackers and foragers. This means that they are now operating with regular parts of the Army like the Ashuril Scouts.
Ashuril Scouts are one of the oldest units in the Andurian Army. Derived from the scouts that led the clan Andur to the city that now bears their name. They are critical element to the army operating in the field.
They would classify as being light cavalry archers wearing not more than a short chain mail hauberk, padding and a simple, light open helm. Their only other protection is a small targe-style shield and their speed and wits! Their main weapons is a composite bow and light one hand straight sword. Here we see one of the scouts having his first contact with the fennecs
While this sketch does show most an Ashuril Scouts equipment it does not show the somewhat mottled earth tone cloak that they wear all the time while in the field. In fact the mottled cloaks are almost a badge of rank for them. They provide their wearer with protection from the desert sun. They serve as impromptu shed and shelter for their owner while resting. At night they serve duty as blanket and bedroll, but their most useful function maybe as camouflage for their wearer. The mottled color blends well into a variety of terrain, and when lying or kneeling the cloak helps break up the outline of the wearer.
In fact low visibility is what the Scouts are all about. Their entire ensemble is all in earth tones. Even their chain mail and helm have a controlled russet finish to it that is gives it durability in the field and helps reduce the chance of accidentally glare off of it. If you want to wear flashy, colorful, gaudy outfits apply to another unit.

Still for the Andurian Army they are consider light. They have no real arm or leg defense, and their hauberks only come down to the groin instead of the knees. Also their shields are lighter and smaller than many of shields carried by other members of the Andurian army. Also they avoid Lamellar style armor; although some will wear a short brigandine style of armor instead of chain. That style will only cover the chest and sometimes the upper arm area.
Or apply to my creation, the Grand Fenwick Ducal Guard (except that they're very selective about who gets to join).

Heh! The first "Real" fennic I ever saw was at a special exhibit at the L. A. County fair. The little critter was fast asleep in the corner of his aquairium, and I would say he could have slept in the cup of my palm with room to spare. Shortly afterwards I watched as two school children approached the exhibit and after saying, "What's THAT?!" One of them said "It's asleep... Quiet!" The other reached out to rap the glass, and said, "What the Heck does 'Nocturnal" mean?" I was just about to tell the Child EXACTLY what it meant, but a Docent appeared and saved me the trouble.
