Little bit of info on the pair of Hyenas in my area - https://outofafricapark.com/meet-th.....chipa-chitabe/
Considering he may live to be 40, that's rather 'middle-aged'.Besides swimming, they love stinky things and chasing children around the perimeter of their habitat. My brother has a Dingo. Okay, he looks like a Dingo. He enjoys paying with very small children, but too many of them makes him a little hefty.
Oh yes, got interested in them some years ago when Out of Africa was in a different location. One staff member was driving a male one around in a golf cart - she said after one trip in the cart to the pool area - he insisted on being driven there instead of walking. Freddy in the comic kinda of reminds me of that one.
I know, got a laugh out of that one, but it is true, they follow the kiddos around like mad. Fence along the path by the Hyena enclosure is triple layer to keep little fingers out. Somewhere I have video of the two hyenas drooling over a little girl in a stroller and the kid going "Doggy Doggy!" Oh even better are the Zip Lines over the Big Cat enclosures at that park. Cats just sit there watching fat humans pass overhead. I swear the Lions are going to start throwing rocks....
Holy Hell! I know that this country seems to have a population problem and Jinjur pretty much encourages throwing hyenas into a war zone to better reduce their heavy amounts of citizenry, but wanting to shoot orphaned children on sight?! I don't know why, but that freaking disgusted me.
That's good, because the Rackenroon hyenas are supposed to have a somewhat syncopated accent, and I've been trying to write their dialog in a way which conveys this. Except for Koz, who sounds like Carl Ballantine, Gruber on "McHale's Navy," and Songween, who sounds like Laverne the gargoyle from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
As I've mentioned, I'm basing Crocutan culture on that of Victorian England, only gender-reversed. In real life, spotted hyena females dominate the males, so a martial, female-dominated culture was called for here.
You may not believe me when I say I'm not a rampaging feminist--I'm just writing a story based on real-life events, stirred around and reassembled to fit.

Honestly, in my book at least, your willingness to create and show a Matriarchy that's not a perfect society is enough to dismiss any claims of you being a "rampaging feminist". I'm certain there are radical feminists out there who refuse to entertain the very idea that women are not, in fact, perfect saints incapable of doing any wrong. In reality, when people get power, they don't always use it for good. There are no angels among us, that I know of, so it matters little what system we use or what people govern us. Power corrupts, and few can resist its influence.
At least you're willing to show how things might happen if women were on top instead of men, and it's not all good. I hate when anyone writes their own group as being perfect in righteousness. Only God can claim that, and even then people dispute it. So how can we claim mere mortals are above reproach? Because of their gender? I think not.
In any case, you don't seem to be trying to politicize things, which I appreciate. Even though we might disagree on a lot of things (and I'm only guessing that we do), at least we can agree on what makes a good story. =) And you're doing quite well with this one.
Just please forgive me for the late comment. XD I'm way behind on my inbox! Maybe I should cut down on the number of people I watch. =P Might make it easier to catch up.
