This is why You must keep up maintenance.
I have a gun show I'm attending in the morning, mainly because I am still seriously low on getting my bills covered by Monday. I was in my gun safe looking for a potential 'sacrificial lamb' I'm willing to part with if the price is right.
And to my horror, found mold on my various pieces of collection, and in some cases, surface rust. The image you see here is my Soumi M31 9mm SMG of WW2 Finnish fame (semi only now ) As an example of what I have faced. I literally spent the next few hours re-oiling, removing surface rust, wiping down each piece in the safe. And the Desiccant can bakes in the oven to recharge. And I had oiled everything up back in November. Though it was good to catch my CZ-75B in the nick of time to avoid problems.
I seriously need to obtain Golden Rods (electronic heating rods to remove humidity)to place in the safes to curb this headache at some point when I can financially swing them. Thankfully Amazon has them cheaper than Cabelahs.
But to those in more humid climates...keep an eye on your gear. Don't let this happen to you.

Looks like Mildew. We had a problem with that stuff when my family was in Maryland in the 1969 to 1971 time frame. Dad uncased his typewriter and it was all white and fuzzy.
Hope it didn't mess up that Finn too badly. I almost bought one when JG Sales had them, went with the Sterling rebuild instead and that sucker had issues with going cyclic

I had a gun cover that was wonderfully soft and I loved it... but then the gun inside got a little bit of rust. And from then on, no matter what I did, the gun would get a little rusty if I used that cover. I had to toss it. Rust is like cancer. Nothing to do but either remove it completely, or manage it.
Or, slather it with Frog Lube. I did that to a derringer I once had. I was able to fire that thing underwater in a friend's swimming pool repeatedly (make sure there are no air bubbles) and as long as I dried everything out and kept it oiled, it didn't develop rust. Also, it wasn't a Bond Arms derringer, it was a Davis Derringer, but still, it didn't rust!

Beaten mold, once you kill the spores you win. It is a constant battle anyplace humid. I have AC and active filtration. My HVAC system kills mold spores. We have not had a mold issue since in a 100 year old house.
The fungus will be on the surface because the wood is sealed. It is eating the varnish. You can also reseal the stock. No air, no moisture, no growth.
I had a rust issue in the kurkri sheath, took it apart cleaned sealed and rebuilt it.
Rust and mold are beatable, but the war is never ending. Clean the guns with a moldicide, clean the gun safe likewise. Yes get the desiccate working again. Oil them puppies.
For something you do not use on a regular basis I recommend Renaissance Wax. Petro based micro crystal wax I use and was recommend to me by The Henry Ford to preserve things. Wood, metal, or leather. I would not use it inside barrels of active firearms. I bought a tin 30 years ago and even with frequent use still have most of it. A little goes a very long way.

A small price to pay for being able to defend yourself, while the gun-control retards get slaughtered by communist goons and gang-bangers from leftist-run cities.
They want to get mugged, raped and killed? Fine. But they shouldn't force us to join them because they're feeling lonely getting mugged, raped and killed.

once a month. And every time I fire. Oil the metal, oil the wood. Don't keep it in a safe though. wall rack, same place my grandfather and father kept theirs. Kids can't reach it, ammo is locked into the box underneath. With the bolt, which is wrapped in an oiled cloth.

A friend, (not for guns) stole my Browning action Remington 20 gauge long barrel three-shot shotgun the barrel will score if nonlead shot is fired through it, it is rifled inside. He has it in Michigan where it is notoriously wet in a gun safe. I don't have the money to travel out there to take it back, nor shipping to a gun store out here.
They sell (by the bucket in some places), (I can't recall the proper Name/Chemical used), packets that suck the moisture out of a close space. Difference sizes/capacities from small boxes (for say, ammo), and all the way up to your entire travel trailer/RV.
Of course, you still need to replace them accordingly.
Wood stocks are awesome for historically correct (or Traditionalist) weaponry, but there's also a good reason synthetic stocks are around.
