The founding of the Union of Allied Worlds was a good thing, wasn't it? It ended the privations of the Pirate Lords, after all, and made Terran Space safe for interstellar commerce. Yet in the remote and inhospitable system of Machu Picchu -- "the Hunter's Paradise" -- many of those smaller pirate ships that escaped destruction have taken refuge and are preying on less well-defended systems and shipping. The planet itself may be too wild to raid (as "High King" Shea Kiernan learned over fifty years earlier) but Machuans know from hard experience what happens when a community is isolated from trade, and with every ship going in or out under threat of attack they could well be cut off from the rest of civilization.
Unfortunately for the pirates they've threatened the wrong world. Hunters aren't in the habit of sitting back and waiting for the next attack. When something threatens them they go looking for it! This is the motivation behind Lucius Farding, who organizes a daring escape with a group of like-minded volunteers in search of an armed ship of their own. Drawing on his own past experience as a successful pirate captain who gave up the life, he plans to return and break the stranglehold on his adopted home world or die trying. In doing so he creates an organization that has endured to the current day -- the Star Hunters!
