If I recall correctly, it was the character's reaction to something being said that didn't make sense to him/her. All I can remember for certain is that the person who spoke smiled as he compared the reaction to that of a dog who heard something that confused it.

That's true but the "animals" in my stories are anthros and they still exhibit some aspects of their feral ancestors. Oh, BTW, the human character was mentally comparing the reaction not verbally.
