"Mmm hmm, hmm hmm, hmm hmm...laa, laa laa, laa laa laa...ahhhh...." Katrina the mouse sighed happily, as she finished humming a lullaby to Angela. Angela rested contentedly on her Mommy's very pregnant tummy. They were enjoying their Quiet Time together on the couch. Angela suckled her thumb as her Mommy hugged her softly. She could hear in Mommy's tummy where the new baby was! New babies were exciting, but a little bit scary too. What if Mommy and Daddy wouldn't love her as much anymore? And what if Angela had to move away if there wasn't enough room?
"Soon and very soon, Angie," Mommy said, "Mommy will have three beautiful little baby mice to love and take care of!"
"Mmm..."Angela grumbled cutely. She took her thumb out of her mouth to ask, "Will the new baby have her own toys? 'Cause I'm not giving away Rosie!" she said firmly. (Rosie was Angela's stuffed bunny.)
"Hmhmhm!" Katrina chuckled softly. She pulled Angela in close and murmured "The new baby will have her own toys, and share some of yours. But yes, Darling; Rosie is just for you."
Angela was still curious! "Will the new baby have her own food?"
"Mostly she'll be having Mommy Milk for food, the way you do sometimes. When she's bigger, she'll be able to eat real food like you and Marco."
Resting her head again, Angela murmured through a mouthful of thumb "Hmm...Will the new baby have a different Mommy an' Daddy?"
"Nope. I'll be her Mommy, and Daddy will be her Daddy, the same way we are now," Katrina said. "And we'll love each other so very, very much!"
Now Angela was mad at her Mommy! She didn't want to share her Mommy with anyone else, especially not a baby sister!
"I'm done cuddling now," Angela said, grumpily.
"Oh," said Katrina, sounding a little hurt. "Would you like to snuggle some more later?"
"No," Angela replied. And she scurried away upstairs!
Katrina looked worried as her little mousie ran off. Something big was about to happen!
Angela ran to her bedroom. She could see her old crib packed up, and her new big girl bed sitting there. It wasn't fair! She didn't want so many things to change! This was all her world, not someone else's! Maybe she shouldn't be a big sister anymore. Oh, Mommy was being so very, very dumb! And mean! How dare she have a new baby! Someone needed to teach her a lesson! Then Angela got an idea!
She grabbed Rosie, some of her toys, and her favorite books. Then she tied them up in her favorite blankie, and stomped downstairs to tell Mommy the terrible news!
Mommy was still sitting there on the couch, knitting something. She looked up to see a big angry look on her daughter's face!
"Mommy, I don't wanna baby sister. I'm gonna run away!" Angela pouted.
"Are you, dearie?" asked Mommy.
"Yes!" Angela stomped.
"Oh. I'll miss you!"
"Well, I won't miss you!"
Well, that certainly wasn't true at all. Not one teensy-weensy little bit. Angela was really very scared of being away from Mommy, even if she was mad. But she didn't want to back out now!
"I'm gonna run far, far away, and I'm, never ebber coming back!"
"Aww, that makes me sad. Where are you going to run away to, Angie?" Mommy said.
"Under the big table!" said Angela. And she scurried underneath the family dinner table just as she said! "And I'm never coming out, so don't make me!"
Mommy was trying not to laugh! She watched as Angela's cute little tail peeked out from under the tablecloth.
Angela unfurled her blanket and took out her things, as she sat on one of the table legs. She was so mad! She wanted Mommy to yell and cry, and beg her not to leave! But Angela also felt glad she didn't. Oh, she was so confused! Hugging Rosie helped her feel better though.
Mommy thought Angela might need her to stay close by, even if she was mad with her. So she took her knitting to the dining room table, and started working there, humming gently.
Angela stared angrily at Mommy's shoes. For no particular reason, she started talking to Rosie the bunny. "We're here under the table, Rosie. Away from Mommy for good! She shouldn't be having another baby! She's my Mommy, not someone else's!"
Mommy pretended not to hear, but she did say "Goodness, do I miss Angela. Babies need big sisters too, you know. I wonder how long she's been gone?"
"No, I don't miss Mommy! She's being mean! She makes me go to bed while the growed-ups do fun stuff, and won't let me have ice cream for breakfast!" Angela said to Rosie.
"I wonder if big brother Marco will miss Angela, too. And Daddy, what will he think?" Mommy wondered out loud.
Oh no! Running away meant she might not see Daddy anymore either! She hadn't thought of that! Now a terrible, yucky feeling began to fill up her tummy. Maybe she should come out? No, not until Mommy stopped having a baby sister. She was determined! But still- even if she was mad at Mommy, she needed her Daddy!
Just then, there was a knock at the door just as it opened. "Hi, Mommy!" said Marco. He was home from preschool! His Daddy, Anthony, walked right in behind him!
"Hi Marco! Oooh, boy!" Katrina groaned as she got up to her feet. Being pregnant made it very tough to get in and out of chairs! She held out her arms for her son. "C'mere, you!"
Marco ran into his Mommy's arms, and gave her a big, big hug! And some kisses on her tummy for the new baby, too!
"That's my good little boy! How are you? Did you learn anything special today?"
"Uh-huh, Mrs. Valerie taught us about letters! I practiced writing my name, too!" said Marco.
Angela smiled, feeling a little better. Big brothers were so smart! She couldn't wait until she was big enough for preschool, too!
"Heya gorgeous," said Daddy. He smelled really stinky, as usual- he was a garbage man! "Can I get a hug, too?" he asked teasingly.
"Not until you take a bath, mister. Peeyuu!" Mommy teased back, pinching her nose.
Angela wanted sooooo badly to run out and give her Daddy a big hug, like she always did when he came home! She never cared if he smelled stinky! Oh, but not today....
Daddy must have noticed, because he said "Hey, where's Angie?"
"Oh, she ran away today." Seeing the worried look on her husband's face, she quickly added "She's hiding under the dining room table."
"Oh," Daddy sighed in relief. "Did she say why?"
"Yeah, she has the new big sister blues."
"Aw man! Do you want me to try and get her out?" Daddy asked.
"No, I don't think so. She'll come out on her own soon." Mommy replied.
"I WILL NOT!!!" Angela yelled. Now she was even madder! How dare they talk as if she weren't there! "I'M NEVER EBBER COMING OUT!"
"Heheheheh...Oh yeah?" Daddy giggled. "Are you just gonna stay under the table forever and ever, kiddo? What if you get hungry, or need a diaper change from Mommy?"
"And just who said I was going to change her diaper, hmm?" Katrina asked naughtily. "I think you could stand to change one or two stinkers around here, mister!"
Angela didn't answer. She was still feeling mad and sad at the grown-ups for laughing at her. And being under the table was soooo boring when you didn't have anyone to play with!
Marco remembered how he had felt when Angela was still in Mommy's tummy. He hadn't been sure how much he'd wanted to be a big brother either. He certainly remembered all the times he'd pleaded with Mommy and Daddy to send Angela back to the hospital when he was younger.
He crawled under the table to visit his little sister. "Hey Angela. Can I run away too?"
"No," she said. She was still kinda mad. "But yoo can stay if you wanna."
"Yaay!" said Marco. He took out his Nintendo DS from his pocket, and started playing a game.
"Oooh, watsat?!" Angela asked excitedly!
"Super Mario! I'm gonna beat up the big bad bomb-omb king!" Marco said.
Angela loved watching her brother play! She thought he was so brave for going against something so scary! She nestled her chin on her big brother's shoulder to watch.
"Watchit....no, not that way!""Look out!" Angela squealed as her eyes followed the little man in the red hat dart around the bomb-omb baddie!
"Got him!""Hooray!" said Angela.
Just as Marco was finishing, the doorbell rang!
"Hey Angela, I'm gonna go ride bikes with Paulie. You can come join us on your trike, if you wanna!"
Angela wanted to, but she still didn't want to come out until after Mommy stopped having the baby. "No thank you," she said, sadly.
"Aww, you sure? You can still be a runaway on your trike, if you wanna," said Marco.
Angela just looked at her knees. Maybe if she didn't say anything, Marco would change his mind and stay.
"Marco, you coming?" Paulie said.
"Yeah man, wait for me!" Marco shouted. He ran towards the door, but not before saying "I'll be back soon, Angela! Love you lots!" And then the door slammed, and he was gone.
Now Angela was alone again under the table. This wasn't so much fun anymore! Now she just felt sad and bored. There wasn't anything fun to do now that Marco was gone! Then she heard Daddy enter the kitchen!
"Angela?" said Daddy. "I'm making lasagna for dinner tonight. You wanna help me with the squishy cheese?"
Ooh! Angela loved helping Daddy make lasagna! She loved mixing the tomato sauce and cheese together with her paws to make a big yummy squishy mess! She was about to jump out when she remembered she couldn't. "No...." she said, sadly.
"Aww man! You sure, babycake? I could really use your help."
"I can't, Daddy. I'm run away, and runaway mice don't help with lasagna." Now she felt sad. What if Daddy couldn't make the lasagna without her?
"Are you sure? I'm pretty sure even runaway mice girls like helping with lasagna," Daddy said.
Angela suckled her thumb sadly. She didn't feel like talking anymore. Being a runaway wasn't much fun.
"Eh, alright kiddo. If you change your mind, Daddy's right here," said Anthony as he started squishing the cheese and tomatoes together.
Soon, it was time for dinner. Angela heard plates and glasses being set down. Mommy dragged her high chair out to the table. Could it be they were expecting her? No. She had been a naughty little girl who'd ran away; why should they want her anymore? Besides, they had the baby sister now. She sniffled a little, and blinked her eyes. This wasn't fun anymore!
"Bless us O Lord, and these thy gifts we are about to receive from thy bounty, through Jesus Christ your son, Amen," Daddy said. "Right guys, dig in!"
Now Angela was uncomfortable, with everyone's shoes and legs very near. She could see her Mommy's shoes! A big part of her wanted to say she was sorry, and sit on her Mommy's lap again.
"Where's Marco?" asked Daddy?"I'm not sure. Not in the house, I know that," Mommy replied.
"He's out with Paulie!" Angela wanted to say.
"Eh, must be out with friends, I guess." Anthony said."I'll try calling Paulie's Mom after we finish eating." said Katrina.
"Sigh....I do like it better when the kids are eating with us. Its always nice, hearing the sound of babies munching away," said Anthony.
There was the sound of chewing for a bit, then Katrina asked (in a rather silly-sounding voice,) "Where in the world do you think Angela is?"
"Goodness, I'm not sure. I haven't seen her since she ran away!" said Daddy.
"Oh darn. Now her baby sister won't have anyone but Marco to play with," said Katrina.
"Boy oh boy, do I miss Angela," Daddy said."Uh-huh! I remember all her little songs and stories!" said Mommy.
"Remember the one about the caterpillar?" asked Daddy.
"Hatch, hatch little egg,-"
"I'm so very small..."
"...Teeny tiny caterpillar,"
"...You can't see me at all!""Hahahaha!" Both of them laughed!
"Baby sisters are lovely, but I don't think they're enough," Mommy said.
"Nope! A family means everyone all together! Everyone needs to know how much we love each other!" said Daddy.
That was what Angela wanted to hear! Slowly, very slowly, she crawled out from under the table, and nestled in her Mommy's lap.
"Oh, why lookie here! Angela, you were in my lap the entire time! Your Daddy and I were just talking about you!"
She never wanted to let go of Mommy! She felt really bad for running away now. But Mommy still loved her, and that was what mattered! Angela felt her eyes water a bit.
"Awww! Are you crying, Angie?" asked Mommy.
"*sniffle*...Only a little..."
"Awwwwww!" cooed Mommy. "Its okay! I'm so glad you're home, sweet love!""Its as if you never left!" Daddy chuckled!
Angela got off Mommy so she could go hug Daddy too!"Aww, man!" Daddy kissed the top her head. "I missed my sweet little mousie! Are you hungry? Are you ready for lasagna now?"
"Yes please!" Angela said. Daddy buckled her into her high chair, and cut her a nice big piece of lasagna to eat! He could tell Angela was going to get a lot of the sauce on her fur, but that was okay! Angela was just happy that all was well again, and that Mommy and Daddy still loved her after all!
The family spent a time together, and much love was shared.

"All right, kiddo. We're all nice and clean, and now its time for your nighttime diaper and jammies," said Daddy, as he finished rubbing Angela down with the towel.
"Hahahaha!" Angela giggled! She liked this part of bedtime best of all!
"Mmmmwah!" said Daddy as he kissed his little mouse. He carried her in his arms to her changing table. There he sat her down, and dressed Angela into her diaper after a nice helping of baby powder.
"Up goes one foot, and then the other...good girl!" Daddy praised as he helped her get her footie jammies on.
Mommy was in Angela's bedroom too. Mommy was sitting in the rocking chair, undoing part of her nightgown. Angela needed her Mommy Milk before bed! Holding out her arms, she said "Come on, Angie. Mommy always knows when you're hungry!"
Daddy carried her over, and placed Angela in her Mommy's lap. Angela curled up nice and snug, and happily started suckling.
"Hmmhmmhmm...," Katrina chuckled. She stroked her little one's fur softly and tenderly. "There we are...who's Mommy's precious little girl? Is it you? Is it you? Oh yes, I think so. I think so!" she cooed lovingly.
As soon as Angela was done, Mommy and Daddy took turns reading her a bedtime story. Angela cuddled up with Rosie as she listened to them read. "Once upon a time..."
As Angela lay down in her bed, eyes heavy with sleep, she asked, "Mommy, Daddy, will you still love me after the new baby comes?"
Mommy wrapped up Angela in a warm, tight hug while Daddy gave her a big kiss! "Oh Angela, sweetheart, your Daddy and I will always love you! We'll love you forever and ever, as big as the sky, and deep as the ocean, and the whole wide world! Nothing can ever change that!"
"We love every last little bit of you, kiddo," said Daddy. "Stinky diapers and tantrums included!"
Angela smiled, as her eyes got heavier and heavier. "Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Tell the new baby she can borrow Rosie...but only if she pwomises to give her back..."
"I sure will! Thank you so much, Angela. Sleep well! I love you, my baby!"
"...I wub yoo too...." said Angela.
And she drifted off to sleep in her new bed, happy that she was still her Mommy's baby after all.

"Mmm hmm, hmm hmm, hmm hmm...laa, laa laa, laa laa laa...ahhhh...." Katrina the mouse sighed happily, as she finished humming a lullaby to Angela.
