I have been playing a new game I recently learned about. Got the bad ending. Guess you'd best stay away from me because I might decide to assimilate you too! ;)

I'm not saying that it always has to be the case... I guess I'm saying that exploring what a transformation means for the person is something where stories in particular have a lot of latitude. It could be that nothing changes - although I indeed think that is unlikely. Even from a physiological standpoint: When the shape of the head changes into something else, the interior of the cranium is probably structured slightly different. What that means for the consciousness of someone - is an interesting question, I think.
My main point is: interesting questions can arise in TF settings - namely if you are still "you", if you suddenly have a craving for raw meat after transforming into some kind of predatory species - and were a vegetarian before.

Ah yeah, I'm sure there'll be different biological pathways so the new body can function the way it's meant. I guess when I say I want to "be" there, I mean more like I still want my memories, dreams, and desires. I guess it comes to what being anthropomorphic means — unless you're talking more of a feral/beast transformation.
I guess my point is: It's complicated :P
Memories themselves *might* be unchanging - but what they mean to us and how we see them changes slowly as we age. The same is true for dreams and desires. Now - In particular the desires would probably change when you are suddenly an anthro wolf - for example. But you also might dream more of moving to some remote place in the wildness or see some memory in a different way.
So - what I'm trying to say is: TF allows to explore all that in a really interesting way.
