Magolobo]
There’s an old Mayan tale about a coyote who, keen with hunger, tries to trick a hen into coming down from a tree. Having admired Magolobo’s work for years, and knowing his skill with artwork of totemic Central/South American influence, I knew he would be perfect for a commission based on this story -- with Xyk playing his ancestral role, of course!
Magolobo also made some great enhancements to the piece. For starters, the “hen” was replaced with a Quetzal, a brightly colored bird native to the area. Next, the “tree” was replaced with a Mayan stone pillar fashioned in the shape of Kukulkan, the Mayan “feathered serpent” deity. And of course, he designed Xyk’s costume, which I absolutely adore. All told, he took my simple idea and gave it a wonderful flavor of authenticity. And this is to say nothing of his incredible work with all the detail, colors, lighting, and texture!
Oh, and I can’t get enough of Xyk’s expression, either. What a perfect coyote grin! Now who couldn’t trust a look like that, right??
Thanks so much, Magolobo!
