Ula - 'Gem of the Sea'
Now this design came out even better than I expected.
Sitting with these two halves of a little grey clam shell, I wanted to design a pair of earrings with a unique kind of setting that would: hold the shells securely, with the minimum amount of metal, require no adhesive and follow the natural form of the shells so as not to distract from their simple beauty. Effectively, I wanted the setting to look like an extension of the shells themselves.
And I think I managed to achieve just that.~
With some careful bending and carving, I fashioned two sickled shaped silver brackets with an angled groove along the inner edge. I made a string of progressively smaller links like bubbles rising from the shell, cleaned and polished everything thoroughly and then, very carefully, clipped the two halves into place.
It was an experiment and a bit of a risk, but this time it paid off and the principle is one I will definitely be using again in future~ I chose the name Ula, purportedly Celtic in origin, for it's meaning: 'Gem of the Sea'.
