Well, if its a longsword, and he's able to wield it with both hands and is proficient with that type of weaponry then its a 1d10 in 5e terms. The 1d8 is one-handed damage. Longswords in 5e have the versatile trait, which allows this.
Not sure what Gene is referencing there. Could very well be a different ruleset to DnD, as its not even Pathfinder or 3.5 from what I can tell.
