Calcifer comes from a tribe of warrior-like 'mons living in the vicinity of a volcano.
He's actually an exile from his tribe... a self-imposed exile due to disagreeing with their beliefs and standards. He's a good fellow and can be very fierce in a fight.

The "seal" on his head when he's a Typhlosion is more or less a mark of exile.
