Some of you may have seen me refer in descriptions and/or comments to something as "Deva's Cuteness Challenge". The concept is simple: Deva Xenelis claims that, as a (roughly) 14 ft. kangaroo, her definition of "cute" is so broad that she has yet to see someone or something she would NOT be willing to invite into her home and keep as a pet.
Over the years, many of us have tried to see if there is something scary enough, or disturbing enough, that, given the opportunity, she would say no.
These are our results thus far. Deva claims she would be willing to adopt every single one of the following scary and/or disturbing characters (and, in some cases, already has).
Before we continue, a little note: Deva did give us some restrictions.
#1: No corruptions.
It's not that Deva would not be willing to take them in, but rather that her agenda upon adoption would be to undo the corruption and nurse them back to health, thereby defeating any purpose to including them in such a list. So no mutants, no zombies, nothing for which what makes it scary and/or creepy is the fact that it used to be something else.
Deva:
"One of Tera's mates showed me some clips of the Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day. Which I thought looked like the stink spirit from Spirited Away, which, spoiler alert, was actually a polluted river spirit. So I would adopt the G.M.P., but only after my superiors in the Special Associates had certified him purified, in which case he would definitely not be a poo monster anymore.
"I also had a few Power Rangers monster suggested to me, which I would also have to submit to my superiors at first since they were crafted from clay and infused with evil. But for the record, I would LOVE to have my very own Bopp-A-Roo or Soccadillo.
"Finally, I had to exclude all the reploids from Mega Man X that were suggested to me for a similar reason. They won't be killer robots, and might not even have any of their original personalities, after my superiors in the tech department are finished with them."
#2: Must be from her natural perspective.
Countless films have proven that a cat can be horrifying from the perspective of a mouse. But to most of you reading this, a cat will range somewhere on the scale between "cute" and "mildly annoying".
Deva:
"Shere Khan got an honorable nomination for his ability to instill fear just with his name. And, while I would certianly be nervous about tracking down such an individual. . . Well, his reputation is all that distinguishes him from any other tiger. And as many of you already know, I already have a pet tiger."
#3: Named characters only
Deva:
"Unless something is the very last of its kind, there is always potential. One member of the species may be completely incompatable with me and my residency, while another may be perfectly capable of coexisting in my environment. That's why you won't find my pet addiction demon anywhere on this list."
#4: One per franchise
Fairly self-explanatory. This list would get completely consumed by one or two franchises otherwise.
#5: No humans, Pokemon, or Digimon
Similar to the one-per-franchise rule, these three have enough options to warrant their own lists. Which we'll probably never do, because Deva's already established that she will readily adopt ANY human, Pokemon or Digimon.
#6: No OCs
Because I don't want anyone feeling overlooked and/or forgotten if they would like to be Deva's pet, or in any way upset if they did not. Not even in a list that requires everyone included be described as scary or disturbing. And besides, once again, Deva could fill an entire list this way
Beyond this, the criteria for inclusion is simple: Someone, at some place and some time, must have said that they found the individual to be scary or disturbing, either by in-universe characters or by the viewership.
Just for clarification, this is not an official, finalized "Top 25" list. These are just examples that we, the members of Deva's extended household, identified, showed to her thinking "Maybe this would be over the line for her", and found out just how wrong we were.
#25: Kass (Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)
Tera:
(sigh) "Really? We're going to start a list with F.A.'s favorite sexy husbando? Deva, did you submit this one yourself?"
Deva:
"Not necessarily. Kass was referred to by Luke Westaway, co-editor of Outside Xtra, as a 'terrifying ten-foot-tall parrot man' in a 2018 commentary. . .
"And, I admit, I fangasmed pretty hard when I heard him say that. But, as an official channel with over seven hundred thousand subscribers, I'd say Outside Xtra should qualify as official media, and not just some random guy trying to troll me by pretending that someone they want to see in my pouch is scary.
"But I do recognize that there are tons of people, both on F.A. and overall, who would disagree with Luke. That's why I'm putting him at the bottom."
#24: Zonkaroo (Let's Make A Deal)
Tera:
"Umm. . . I take full responsibility for this one. I thought maybe I could mix it up on Deva with what looked like a deformed kangaroo -- that maybe I could weird her out of adopting a pet with something that looked straight out of the outback's uncanny valley."
Deva:
*pats Tera on the head* "Silly birdy forgot that I already have a pet kangaskhan."
#23: Kyaa (Please Save My Earth)
Tera:
"His name is 'Kyaa' because, according to his partner, Lazlo, that is what everyone says the first time they see him. And, while it at first is played for laughs, things do get a bit unsettling again when Shion, a child who has already killed people accidentally with his powers, is told that Kyaa is there because he feeds on his powers. . . Which Lazlo depicts as if eating corn on the cob.
"They never actually confirm whether this is true or not. So, even though Kyaa is downright adorable, and is shown to care a great deal for Shion, it is still kind of unsettling to think about how Lazlo has pretty much subcontracted 99% of the parenting to an oversized feline that could feed on said child in more ways than one."
Deva:
"But the majority of the scariness of Kyaa is in the form of shock, which wears off. And the remaining factor, the disturbing implications and how Kyaa's relationship to Shion's powers is never explained (or even confirmed), would actually INCREASE my chances of being able to adopt him. If I repeated what Lazlo said about Kyaa feeding on Shion's powers to my superiors, they would want me adopt Kyaa AND Shion. Which you better believe I absolutely will one day."
Tera:
"Um, Deva? don't elaborate on how you intend to do that. It would involve spoilers."
#22: Lappy (Lappy's Balloon Bash)
Tera:
*looks at the citation* "You sneaky little bastard."
Deva:
"I'll give you one out of three. I am DEFINITELY not little, and my mother had DNA testing to prove that her husband of a different species was my biological father. But Lappy's running gag in Astral Chain was scaring the new recruits with his ability to seemingly appear out of nowhere, so I still consider it a fair inclusion."
Tera:
"But that Lappy wasn't the same one you're citing. That was Maria in a Lappy costume."
Deva:
"Well that can't be. How do you explain this screenshot of Lappy and Maria together?"
Tera:
". . . . . ."
#21: Douglas (Where The Wild Things Are)
Tera:
"I promise you, this is the last of the entries that will make you think we're cheating. Yes, the titular wild things are beloved, but don't forget everyone: They are initially scary, and only befriend Max when he proves himself to be wild and destructive in his own right.
"So. . . Any particular reason you singled out Douglas, Deva?"
Deva:
"It's not because of his looks. Actually, after Alexander, Douglas was the one I felt I should eliminate first because he looks the most familiar -- the most like something that is actually real -- of the wild things.
"But, umm. . . Those of you who haven't seen the movie. . . Let's just say that, by the end of the movie, there is something that distinguishes Douglas from the others that makes him a little more unsettling to look at. . ." *smiles* "And much more in need of another's love."
#20: Sif (Dark Souls)
Tera:
"Okay, I lied. In hindsight, I'll bet half of you knew Sif would be on the list as soon as you read the title."
Deva:
"That's why the giant sword-wielding wolf is only #20 on the list."
#19: Iorek Byrnison (His Dark Materials)
Tera:
"Fierce. Proud. A true warrior. Everybody loves Iorek. . . But few would dare call him cute."
Deva:
"I'm one of the few." *winks*
#18: Chunky (The Croods)
Tera:
"For the first half of the movie, Chunky was one of. . . Actually, pretty much the only recurring antagonist."
Deva:
"And I knew he'd eventually be taken in as a pet as soon as I saw him. Vibrant colors like that? Those are only beneficial in attracting mates, so the only animals that ever evolve to have them are those with no natural predators AND which can survive without hunting. So even if I had not seen the movie and you put me face to face with one of those, I wouldn't even be concerned for what it could do to me while I'm trying to shove him into my pouch.
"Plus, that massive head makes make think he could be just a baby. So if he were all alone by himself, both my P.S.L. training and my natural kangaroo instincts would DEMAND I adopt him."
#17: Okku (Neverwinter Nights: Mask of the Betrayer)
Tera:
"Similar to Chunky, Okku is the antagonist for the whole first chapter of the campaign. What makes him more fearsome than Chunky is that he's not just a bear. He is a spirit animal, and one fully sentient -- one perfectly capable of articulating WHY he is going to rip out your throat and why all the food, shelter and belly rubs you can give him will not dissuade him."
Deva:
"But he IS a recruitable companion, so there obviously is a way to make peace with him. Without that fact, he would have made my Top 10."
#16: Original Pierre T. Pelican (The New Orleans Pelicans) (ADOPTED)
Tera:
"I will concede that the new Pierre is a vast improvement over the original. But, personally, I never found him to be that disturbing. . . But others have equated him with Pennywise, Jack Torrence, and other horror icons. I'll bet there are at least a few people who think he should be Top 5.
"And, umm. . . Deva? Care to explain the check mark?"
Deva:
*grins* "Creepy Pierre isn't just someone I WOULD adopt. He's someone I DID adopt." *pat-pats Tera* "Tera made an April Fools' photo edit that was supposed to be him jumping out of my pouch. But it was done on an impulse and got zero likes, so Tera deleted it from his gallery. But as far as I'm concerned, it's still canon -- Creepy Pierre is MY Pierre."
#15: Toothless (How To Train Your Dragon) (ADOPTED*)
Tera:
"It's easy to forget that the night fury was once the most feared of all the known dragons."
Deva:
"I kept him low on the list, not because he's since become a beloved character, but because most of that fear was of the unknown. Night furies were stealth predators -- they instilled such fear because, at best, you'd catch a brief flash of one illuminated by its fire blast right before something exploded. Once Toothless was downed and could be seen for what he was, however, a lot of that fear wore off.
"The asterisk is because, technically, I have not adopted THE Toothless. In the great infinitum of alternate universes are countless alternate time lines and unstable ethers that exist in imitation of others. Presumably, the night fury and human I adopted are from one such world. Hence my decision to rename them Hector and Fangfree."
#14: Hamsuke (Overlord)
Tera:
"Similar to Toothless, the 'Wise King of the Forest' was feared a great deal by being unknown -- by being able to attack suddenly and without mercy. We made the decision to put Hamsuke over Toothless because she continues to be feared AFTER she is seen for what she is."
Deva:
"But. . . Come on, all that fear is clearly being played for laughs. Though, like Toothless, she does continue to be a fearsome, even lethal opponent, after she is recruited."
#13: The Sphinx (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
Tera:
"As far as I know, throughout the entirety of the nine-season run of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, only two villains were ever not given any closure: Grogar, and the sphinx."
Deva:
"Grogar, I suspect, will receive his closure in a movie adaptation. And the sphinx will get the colsure she deserves when a giant kangaroo crams her into her pouch and refuses to let her out until I've heard what it sounds like when a pony-sphinx hybrid purrs."
#12: The Toy Animatronics (Five Nights At Freddy's 2) (ADOPTED)
Tera:
"Five Nights At Freddy's, love it or hate it, has forever reshaped, not just survival horror, but horror in general. Bothi in the way we interpret horror, and the way lore is presented. Other games revolving around combining the seemingly innocent with the sinister like Bendy & The Ink Machine and Tattletail, and horror movies like The Banana Splits Movie, might not have even existed without it.
"And, if it isn't obvious, we broke the "one per franchise" rule because Deva has already adopted all four of them."
Deva:
"We're still trying to piece together how they ended up where we found them, but my own personal theory is that the games were actually a ploy to try to trick a higher power (in this case, the player) into righting their wrongs and/or restoring order. Unfortunately, more than one being was doing this, and the efforts of one continuously sabotaged the efforts of the other, instead resulting in an explosion of disjointed time lines and narratives that resulted in the higher powers effectively blowing up their world instead.
"I found the 'Toy' versions drifting in the void, recognized them for what they were, and notified the S.A. And, after receiving the all-clear, I brought them all back home, and they've been helping me maintain the base and look after my organic pets ever since.
"If I had to nominate just one, it would be Mangle. To this day, we still haven't figured out what she was supposed to look like before she was dismantled. So. . . I don't have four pet animatronics so much as I have three pet animatronics and one pet severed but still living head."
Tera:
"One that wants to be just as helpful as the other three but is limited to constantly asking if we need a desk lamp or paperweight."
Deva:
"Yeah, that can still unsettle me sometimes. Not enough to be scary though -- just enough to make me feel guilty and sad."
#11: Royakan (InuYasha)
Tera:
"Kaede described Rōyakan as a 'gentle giant of the forest'. Hakkaru described him as "the demon from Hell who gobbles up anyone who happens to get lost."
Deva:
"It's certainly possible to be both. I'm a gentle giant who gobbles up everyone too, after all."
