For the record: Rubiano's species gets this big naturally.
I did write a bit of a story for it:
The people were explorers who came across Rubiano's island, where they found Rubiano sitting on its nest. As they got close, it kneeled down to try and look at them more closely, and wouldn't move.
The explorers quickly built the shed around the bird and its nest to try and hold it for study.
Then it stood up and this happened.
The people would try it again more than once, with similar results, before giving up and writing in their records that it was "at least 40ft".
Afterwards, the guy responsible for keeping the records spilled some coffee, and the "at least" part ended up getting a coffee stain on it, covering it up.
By the time that people were writing about Rubiano in their books, everybody forgot about the inaccuracy of the records, which nobody thought to dispute.
A monstrous seabird from a mysterious land, big enough to poke its head above the tree tops, and break through any shed that contains it.
By the time people wanted to study it more (we're talking hundreds of years later), they brought along people who actually knew what they were doing - who very quickly made accurate measurements.
Turns out it can stand 50ft if it stands upright.
They still only ever came across a single bird, but given how long it had been, there's obviously more than one.
Also there's rumors that a couple of people from the group tried to climb on its back and fly around. They *did* all come back though, so there's that.
