I'm not sure, but I thought there was some way on there to move things up and down a level so as to make the handguards go over the barrel, but I might be mistaken.
An M14 is a completely different rifle, this is much closer to being an M16, which is based on the AR-15 design, which requires a front sight, or at least a gas block, to cycle the bolt.
