Did their small tail blades mean they were seen as lesser by the military? Did they even join the military often?

Mostly they were artists or scientists, but a few did join the military because they're incredibly useful in colder climates. Mostly those andalites were hybrids of other andalite species, which gave them larger tail blades. Like the incredibly large Southern Plains andalites.

Ax would be your average Blue Plains andalite. Your average andalite with a good size blade and pretty good at running short distances.
