Well the tricky part is proportions and dimensions. With this one I'd say the eyes are too close together, the nose is too narrow, and it looks more like a monkey than a feline. The trick is to use references of species you're trying to emulate, and provide a smooth blend of anthropomorphic traits and the base creature's natural features.

I thought it was a monkey until you said lion but I can definitely see that too.
I really like the fur. Have you tried this model with the mane going around the whole head?
