Funny thing is I hated that Zombie show - had a coworker who kept talking and talking about it.....
The blade is a WW2 bring back - was in a badly abused storage scabbard. Put some new fittings on it for the heck of it. Post 1870 blade, not one of the Heirloom ones but it is sharp. $15 at a local fleamarket about a decade ago.

wow... now that's a find. I used to collect some 40 years ago. I only had waki's but had a couple of really good ones. I sold them to a Japanese collector for the same price I found them because I knew they would go back to Japan. 1870 is nothing to sneeze at. My first, I made the mistake of taking the rust off the tang - it was pre-1600 so that was a bad mistake. The handle was in tatters, but it was white silk so was used during the civil war by someone supporting the emperor. Live and learn.

Dang. I had a buddy of mine from Osaka who is a weapons buff look it over before I did anything with it other than giving it a good wipe down with some break free clp. machine made blade, no marks on the tang. Kept the Shirasaia - its old with some worm holes in the wood - seller said it had been in the basement of a home in the Midwest - former owner decided to sell because the grand kids kept messing with it.
