I'm not a big fan of winter.
As I was walking on the beach the other evening, huddled in my fursuit
against the chilly on-shore breeze, my plastic teeth chattering, I began
to curse the cold air, cold water and cloudy sky.
I flirted with visions of tropical conditions, late evening surf sessions and boating adventures. I began to feel sad that summer was still months away. It was then a little voice in my head said "Oh, you pussy. This ain't cold. Buck up and stop whining."
I was offended at being called a pussy but I realized the voice was right.
Being on FA these past months and chatting with new friends across the US, Canada and even Europe has made me realize how difficult winter can be to negotiate if you have to live with snow and freezing temps for months on end. Or even clouds and rain for days at a time. I have it easy living in So Cal. And I never appreciated that until now...
So thank you, all my new furry ice pops. Your input and comments over the winter have helped me to enjoy the climate here, and appreciate what you guys have to deal with there. You are all waaay tougher than me...

It's been a weird winter for a lot of people. I certainly do envy your warmth over there. Winter is a very dead time to me; not very often am I able to find myself appreciating any aspect of winter, weather artistically or just in general ways. But hey, I live in michigan. We're gonna be dealing with tempermental weather forever :P

This is, honest to God, my absolute favorite time of the year in So Cal, after the madness of the holiday season ends until the madness of summer begins.
There is snow on the mountains in the distance, the skies are gorgeous, everything is green, the beaches are not crowded and free parking spots can be found on the Newport Beach peninsula. And I can wear my jacket that I think makes me look badass.
Yeah, the water is a little cold, but what else is there to complain about?

It was cold today, even for January in Southern California and I remembered this conversation I had with you almost a year ago... it's my favorite time of year all over again. The dust has settled of "the holiday season" which now feels like a distant memory, the hills are green, the mountains are covered with snow and I can park only a few feet from the ocean anywhere on the Newport Beach Peninsula and have the place all to myself. Life is good.
In my line of work, I get to see a great deal of the country at varying times of the year. Some states can handle the snow and are no problem in the winter, others have no concept of it. Like Pennsylvania. They are not a state I would want to Winter in. Wisconsin, on the other hand, has the roads clear the day after a huge storm. And they have good beer. LOTS of good beer.
*waggwaggwagg* Thanks so much for thinking of us frozen furs! hehe. It feels so nice to see a lovely note from a lovely fur whom lives in a lovely part of the globe that shows he is thinking about us! *hugs*
Climate is indeed hindering and can affect us negatively if we let it. It is more of a challenge to be in the north, no doubt about that. Getting outside and embracing the cold is one way I use to enjoy and embrace the cold seasons: Walking in the winter time in the country can be a magical experience. Observing nature during the day time is a lot of fun if you can make the time for it. You can do this even in urban areas. Seeing how the plants and animals adapt and go about their daily routines.
At night, standing in the woods at quiet oneness with the still air, silent forest and clear moon lit night is an experience which is truly magical when the sky is full of stars. You can lie in the snow with your warm coat on and stare up at the heavens. Satellites glide though the sky without sound or effort. You can marvel the constellations and admire all the colors and shapes. You can waste away hours just being humbled by what you are looking at. There is no light pollution out in the country where I live so the night sky is amazing and provides a lot of free entertainment for the dogs and I.
I've been told by friends whom visit me from the south eastern US that they have never seen the starts as bright and brilliant as they are where I am in Prince Edward Island. *waggwagg*

I was thinking of you first and foremost when I posted this submission.
The picture of your shadow cast upon the snow is one of my favorites.
Sounds like you live in symbiosis with your environment.
I really enjoyed your narative about winter nights. I can almost
see the plumes of my breath as I stare into the inky sky.
And I love to watch the satellites!

Thank you so much! *smiles*
I've always loved that song but I had never
seen that live ensemble version. It was awesome!
(I love Van the Man especially)
Rogers Waters is a musician beyond compare.
Not as meaningful, but still fun:

*waggwaggwagg* Roger waters and Pink Floyd are truly amazing. That live video of Tides are Turning is from "The Wall Live in Berlin" Concert. It is the most epic live show ever preformed. They use construction cranes to puppet a 500 foot tall teacher, inflatable pig etc, drive trucks onto stage etc. It is truly amazing and 120% worth seeing if you get the opportunity to download it or whatever. It contains stellar performances from Cyndi Lauper, Brian Adams, Van Morrison and so many more.
Dave Matthews Band's Satellite is a fantastic song. From a great album too.
In sticking with our Satellite theme:
Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1dU5TQLpVA
I phone into some local radio stations and request this every Nov 3rd and ask them to dedicate it to Laika.
Tears me up every time I hear it.

Such a powerful, moving song. Ms. Archer's voice
is moody and beautiful. I loved it. My Laika book is on the way
and I'll forever associate the story with the song. And be
bawling like a 3rd grade girl by page 2.
Looks like I have some new stuff to download from i-tunes tomorrow...

I listen to this song at the end of a day of kayaking,
alone on a beach with my dogs, and it always makes
me teary.
