This is a little back ground about my own universe that surrounds my characters, which I’ve briefly talked about in one of my previous posts labeled ‘Max’.
....
Humans of course manufactured the first cars, however, those cars were just the ordinary lifeless shells (as we all know in real life today). As the world became more advanced throughout the years, some experimenting took place with these vehicles that have become a major part of everyday life. The main goals where in mind while developing these ‘special’ cars. How to make them more efficient, safer and human friendly. How to make them faster, handle and drive better than ever before. How to make them more appealing to customers. Perhaps all of these questions could be answered by giving these heaps of metal life, with the sole purpose to serve and protect the people.
The first successful experiment was performed in Michigan, 1964. The vehicle operated on was that same years Ford Falcon. (Of course since the first car manufactured was ford, it was the first brand to live, for irony’s sake) This living machine was a blank slate at best, but what better place to start? This car was the start of generations of living vehicles. It could breathe, digest, and drive on its own accord, however it failed to blend in with normal traffic, as it drove like no human would. People first looked upon the realization of living cars in horror. A deformed freak among nature. Cold hearted machines that should be entrusted upon with human lives? No way! Many protests where held against the insane experiments, believing the “animal” should be put down.
With the public voice heard, the government was forced to step in and ‘shut down’ any sort of experiments in vehicles. (Of course this was for show to put the crowds at ease) The officials ordered this new living prototype to be taught and restrained to fit in with society, after all, this living machine was believed to be the path to futuristic revolution. They needed this living machine to either bend to their rules or be forced to obey in order for this experiment to advance.
However, the health of the first living car was a whole different matter. This new organism is completely man made, so of course it comes with its own flaws. It’s body was weak and battered, fragile against the outside world, unlike its non-living counterparts that had no feeling and took daily abuse under the ownership of careless people. The motor, built to be that of a natural heart, pumped too weakly for its large and heavy body. More vessel coverage would need to be implemented on this model in order to revive proper circulation. Vision would needed to be improved as well as protection against the environment, along with an array of other defects. Most of the time it seemed the car would limp around as if in great pain. Many of the technicians felt pity, supporting the idea to discontinue. Too many issues arose and noticeably caused pain for the car, but this could not possibly stop a dream. Right?
With so many flaws they simply strove to improve their dream, this time operating on a hand full of cars and trucks. They wished to improve every quality of these vehicles. These new experiments were constructed of stronger materials that upheld against rough use. They could overall breath and flow better, giving out more power and ability. These vehicles were much more capable with the physical feel of things as more vessel coverage allowed more nerve endings, helping the vehicles response. The vehicles looked about like your average car, mirrors, interiors, lights, a fuel injected motor, save for the paneling of the car being a thick layer of soft but rigid structures.
Next was training. Much like a horse, the vehicles were taught to respond to commands and had to get used to being ‘ridden’. They kept the steering wheel, to maintain control if needed, and all of the usual appliances within the cockpit, minus any a/c system. They had no way of tying that in with the breathing apparatus of the vehicles quite yet. This still being in the 1960s, there were not any advanced systems to deal with in the first place.
As they perfected their system with each vehicle and actually got them to behave properly, they decided to try and release the idea to the public again. They were the vehicles that could drive for you, alert you, and protect you. They also saved gas as they required less than an average vehicle and easily followed commands at voice. At first, people were mortified...but curious as well. Many saw this living machine as a wonderful revelation and quickly supported the idea, causing others to follow. People were comforted by the fact they could still be in complete control if needed. You could still manually shift gears, accelerate, brake and steer if needed. Many simply loved the feeling of being driven around by the vehicle itself with only spoken commands, still in control. Completely mind blowing.
More of these living machines were made, at this point, it quickly became a manufacturing process. Overtime, more advancements made these vehicles more durable and efficient. More were demanded across the nation, then quickly spread worldwide. These living machines were labeled as ‘alternatives’. During this time, however, it was still available to have the non-living models, allowing them to still be manufactured despite the obvious upgrades of organic life.
As the years went on they improved the digestive system, giving the car a mouth at the front of the car to eat. The organic materials would further improve mileage and health of the vehicles. Many other ‘natural organs’ were patched in to make the cars self sustainable. The mouth allowed better airflow if needed and made a/c more applausible for them. Lungs were never needed for the vehicles, like the non-living cars oxygen was only needed for the ‘heart’ or the engine. The air intake still acted much like the traditional vehicle, allowing airflow into the block, mixing with fuel to combust and propel the vehicles.
A reproductive system was also added to these living machines, but by company policy, the alternatives were only allowed to reproduce by manufacturers standard, which could only take place in the company’s buildings using a special process. Any alternatives reproduced outside of these standards were ‘taken care of’. They simply had the rule to control any modifications to the vehicles or any cross-breeding among the different manufacturers.
From the start the living machines were sentient, but only knew how to follow the commands under the control of the people. But as the years went they learned how to communicate and recognize feelings. For the most part they communicated with their family unit that consisted of their owners family and their other owned vehicles within the family. Not much integration developed between the alternatives worldwide until much later.
The first thing living machines are introduced to to after manufacture is other alternatives and basic instructions. For the first month they are kept in their respective ranks with the same make and model. Their makel made them family, united. After they are trained up and they are sold out in the public world. However, as they became more aware of themselves, the living machines formed their own network system so to speak. Being able to communicate electronically in silence.
After the first overall shock of having the living vehicles, people grew just as careless with them as they were with their non-living models. We have all seen how people abuse their cars. They never care for them or provide proper maintenance when needed, sometimes simply not wanting to ‘waste money’ on them. The alternatives slowly went through these careless stages, except a much more dire effect took place. After all, they were living beings as well.
With many of the living machines going through constant pain, this sparked outrage amongst the alternatives. Many began to show signs of aggression towards their owners. With their minds interconnected like a live wire, all alternatives felt the pain. The public were outraged at the behavior of their alternatives, firmly believing they should always have control against the vehicle’s wants. Something had to be done.
In 2001, manufacturers implemented a new harness system for the alternatives that was wired into every system of the vehicle. It electronically restricted and controlled the actions of the vehicles. This allowed people to have the complete control they wanted while keeping the benefits of the organic life form. If the owner wished the vehicle to act on its own they could minimize the level of restraint. This allowed the alternative to drive but could quickly be taken over by the new control system, named ECS(Electronic Control System). Along with this new system to put the public mind at ease, technicians still pressed on about the care of the alternatives in order to prevent anymore... unwanted effects.
Many people used the new ECS systems but others refused to. Underneath the power of the system the car could do nothing but see and think. They could still feel but were silenced underneath the system. In order to contact other alternatives they would have to maintain a physical link.
The alternatives free of ECS grew even more outraged. Some people listened to them, felt their rage, wanted to help their friends. A group of people in support of the alternatives found a way to remove the ECS from them, becoming a louder voice for the alternative life forms. However, the majority of the people wanted the full control causing many losing arguments for the group in support of the alternatives.
The group were labeled as rebels against the system, made up of people that fought for the rights of the alternatives, the living machines free of ECS. The group would go out and remove the control system on any vehicle they could get away with and then letting them free. Many fatalities occurred from this as many owners saw this as a way of stealing their rightful property.
Being free of control was an alien feeling to the alternatives. They were allowed to say and act how they wanted, no rules. They could roam freely. The people in this group explained that they were all equal. They were the good people. However, these vehicles were in no position to survive as they could only drive. They still needed to be fed and maintained. There were simply not enough humans to care for every alternative.
Technicians in support of the alternatives operated further on these alternatives and produced parts for the black market. They gave them mostly metal appendages that could grab and hold. They worked like hands for the most part but only had four digits. Nerve endings were built in to convey touch to have a more ‘human-like’ experience for them. These hands allowed them to feed and provide for themselves. They learned how to hunt in different terrains for different classes of vehicle. They even learned how to repair themselves with the help of the human technicians.
The alternatives abilities became sharper as they adapted to a more wild environment, all while steering clear of government officials. With their first month of training after manufacture they could naturally hide in a crowd of non-living vehicles but certain parts of them made them easy to spot.
Technicians built many movable panels for the cars sold on the black market. They could hide an alternative’s mouth and their sensitive underside as well as providing more cover in the engine bay. Special headlights were made to sharpen an alternative’s vision and provide a tint to partially hide their eyes. (Eyes were og built into the headlights, like my art) Most of the alternatives front bumpers were entirely rebuilt to provide a better sense of smell and to accommodate the movable panels up front to allow them to show their mouths or breath better. These panels are then covered by the traditional grills of the non-living cars.
These panels were operated by the alternative itself on command. This made them camouflage quite nicely in the public view, making them seem as if they were a traditional model. The heightened sense of smell and vision also benefited the alternatives when hunting or escaping unwanted humans.
Another advanced system (comes along in 2004)helped along with the rebels was the creation of special skin for the alternatives. This new feature allowed the exterior and interior panels of the car to be hardened on the vehicles command. Their real skin is that of a satin wrap texture, but slightly squishy. This feature allowed them to tense up the skin and make it harder much like the exterior panels irl in order to protect them and further help with camouflage, as it gave them a glossy finish in texture, much like real paint. This feature becomes an inherited trait later.
The alternatives were manufactured with big, but blunt, teeth to chew organic material. The rebels sharpened their teeth to allow them to rip into wild meals as well as to protect themselves. This obviously made them more dangerous and threatening when they pull back their lips and show off a razor sharp set of teeth.
Surprisingly enough, the manufacturers followed suit with covering the mouth of the ECS alternatives with panels, but were protected by lock and key. This made the controlled cars more ‘friendly’ in the eyes of the public after seeing the rebel alternatives with vicious teeth. (2002)
In 2016, carbon fiber became mainly used in the manufacturing process of alternatives.
Even though all of the alternatives were grouped together as rebels, they still mainly kept to their own make and model, as they were the first to be initiated after manufacture. Just like in today’s world, a company will only sell the cars it produces, not a different company’s. Each alternative’s brand separated them from the different ones and united the ones that shared the same one. This formed a clan for each make (Chevrolet, Ford, etc.) Doing this inevitably caused disruptions between the alternatives as they fought for territory and rights to claim for their name over the others.
(In this I’m mainly going to talk about Chevrolet because it directly relates to my main character, but should be the same function for every brand). With all great communities, leaders have to step up within the alternative clans. This is where we get into all of the ranking.
Chevrolet is its own large clan made up of groups that consist of each different model within the make. So the groups would be Camaro, Silverado, Impala, etc. Large trucks(Silverado) are the main defense of the clan, smaller trucks(Colorado) are warriors as well but help hunt big prey. Camaros are mainly hunters but their very territorial nature makes them natural defenders as well. Corvettes strictly hunt for the clan as well as the other small models. SUVs and large sedans defend and patrol territories accompanied by at least one large truck.
Within each model grouping within a clan there are alphas for each generation within. For the Camaro there is six generations, making six alphas for each individual generation. 1st Gen-1967/1969, 2nd Gen-1970/1981, 3rd Gen-1982/1992, 4th Gen-1993/2002, 5th Gen-2010/2015, and lastly 6th Gen-2016/present. Camaro also has different different trims or class for each generation. In the 6th generation, the LS, 1LT/2LT/3LT, 1SS/2SS and ZL1. This determines who becomes alpha, usually the most advanced class, in this case the ZL1. The alpha is typically larger than other Camaros especially since it’s the highest trim level, hello big supercharged V8 here. The LS and LT trims consist of 4 and 6 cylinder cars, making them smaller and less powerful, but more quiet for hunting. It’s common for either a ZL1 or an SS to be alpha, as they are both V8, more suited for gettin rough and dirty with others if needed. My main character Blackout is a ZL1 1LE and is the alpha of the 6th Gen Camaro. (The 1LE add on is simply a track package if you are wondering, gives the black hood among other differences). My other character, Cameron, is a 2012 ZL1, alpha of the 5th Gen Camaro.
Without any manufacturer to help with the reproductive process, the alternatives mated freely, with their own make and models respectively. It was absurd in their eyes to mate with a different clan or even with a different model. They mostly stuck to keeping their bloodlines pure. They even go as far as to only reproduce within their own generation but they could between different trims/classes. So an SS could mate with an LT or a ZL1 as long as it’s within the same generation of a model.
At this point as the rebels grow more powerful in 2010, the government focused on keeping the controlled alternatives restricted at all times, even making the procedure to remove ECS deadly to the host. Even with this new act, the rebel alternatives grew as they can reproduce freely now.
There is a lot more backstory especially following Blackout and Cameron. They were initially my main characters along with Max, the Silverado. There is tons more to write about but I think this is a good starting place to educate you guys about my universe, it gives the basic facts. But, keep in mind this little skit here ended in 2017...stuff happens. Humans did anything to kill the rebel alternatives off.
I will continue the story in the future. It will follow my two Camaro boys as well as a handful of other reoccurring characters. I’ll also include another writing about different behaviors within models and such, but keep in mind I’ve only really built around American brands so if you have a different make of character that can be a little bit more up to you guys, I don’t have much of an opinion there.
If you have questions or concerns, feel free to ask! ;)

Very nice write up (though some spaces between paragraphs would be nice). It's interesting that your machines would put importance to makes and models even when trying to rebel on what is forced upon them.
I'm not clear on how intelligent your living machines are by the end. Are they more like trained animals or are they more than that?
I'm not clear on how intelligent your living machines are by the end. Are they more like trained animals or are they more than that?
At first they are a lot like trained animals when first introduced, simply there to serve. Over time as they learn more complex feelings they began to become more individual. As stated before they can communicate electronically so they sorta feed off of what others have learned, but they must choose to do this, it’s not like an automatic thing. So yes, they become more intelligent over time, they can talk like humans and relate to them as well as form bonds and such. They initially were taught to read and understand the English and Spanish language in the manufacturing process, this was needed at times to follow instructions(such as road signs). By the 1980s they became just as intelligent as humans so to speak, time had allowed them to learn and mature along with the help of the advancements made to their systems.
The separation of models was implemented because some people really care about that(like me, I’m overall a Camaro enthusiast), and it gives a lead for a sort of power structure and different ranks. I can see why it might be confusing. But yes, these differences that are being established by all of the different brands with so much importance does indeed have a negative effect for the rebellion. It made them weak as a whole when choosing not to fight together. In my next story it should be more apparent.

It made them weak as a whole when choosing not to fight together. In my next story it should be more apparent.
Nice. I hadn't picked up that they were at least as intelligent as humans by the end of your setup.
Definitely looking forward to reading more of your lore and learning more about your spin on living vehicles.
Love your art of these guys, by the way. Hope to see more of the things you've talked about like hunting, different skins and body types, and other interesting factoids. Also more car body types! :D

Thanks :D
Yeah, I’m not all that great at putting every detail, thanks for making me clarify so it’s more understandable.
I’ll most likely post a lot of short writings around each individual abilities and such, as well as random facts too.
I’m also assuming by car body types you mean different models? Do tell me if I’m wrong.

I fixed the spacing!
I’ll definitely go in depth for the overlooked sedans and hatchbacks, after all each model plays an important role. Will be explained in the future!
Also, since you are obviously into those versa, maybe you would like to give them their own special characteristics and quirks. I’ll be making short notes on those for a few vehicles, especially if requested.

Much nicer~!
I wasn't even sure if you were interested in the other models of vehicles outside of the ones in your galleries, so I had to poke. Some LM folk laser focus on their interests, which is fine. I'm very interested in outliers and other unique instances that offer glimpses into new ideas.
Would be stoked to hear your own ideas for how your version of Versas live and operate in your fiction, haha. I've got a bias towards them after all. I'd pitch in ideas, but honestly I think I need to get a better idea of what makes your modern day living machines special first. Broad stuff like having more space for lugging around things the other cars need could work, but don't take into account the traits of your machines.
I'm also interested to hear how you picture being inside one of the unshackled alternatives is like. Are they just normal on the inside and the car just moves on its own? Or can they operate and move everything inside of them in an alien-like fashion, as though you were inside a real live creature rather than a machine.

You can decide if you want to pitch in with the versa after you see how I do other vehicles and such. Mainly consists of what their models do within the clan, as well as their own behaviors and habits, as well as other things. I do like your idea there.
Their interior is just like any normal car, except the cloth, leather, and plastic panels are the squishy but rigid skin. However, buttons(like the radio set up, a/c, and other misc. stuff) and gear shifters would remain plastic or metal as they are there for human use. So at first glance it looks like any car and functions like one too. Some rebel alternatives had all of this removed, like the radio and seats maybe, plus this made them lighter.

im really curious how the living vehicles interacted with their human counterparts, like if they felt emotions and feelings for them :o
would be kinda cute to have a car that youre super chill with and you go somewhere nice end enjoy the day with your car and really connect with it and remove the ECS and other restrictions and allow it to be completely free when you gain that trust with the vehicle and it accepts you like a member of its own and gets all comfortable lol. That'd be too cute, spending time with your ca all arm around its tire just looking off into the sunset or something and it leans into you comfortably <3

Alternatives have always been able to feel a bond toward their humans within the family unit from the beginning. There is really nothing like a bond between a car and it’s driver. The rebellion began because people abused their vehicles, severing any bond if there was one even formed, creating the rebel alternatives. But not every bond was broken, some alternatives stayed loyally with their human throughout the rebellion, this mostly kept them safe of ECS and out of the rebel group. Some of these humans, who believed in these alternatives, that they should be treated much nicer and to let them have their own voice in matters for once, supported the rebel cause. While the rebel alternatives feared and hated most humans, their supporters were definitely an exception, especially when they helped them so much, like giving them important components to actually survive in the wild.
The way I describe these facts aren’t really good at conveying how much they converse within their group and with their supportive humans. In their family unit they would have talked with the people about their day, be taught to joke and laugh, feel sorrow. But in the rebel group, they aren’t entirely restricted to these polite, safe conversations. Sometimes these conversations could lead to feelings, more than some manufactured bond as intended. So yes, if you were to connect with an alternative more intimately, they would probably be carrying you with them most of the time, just to be alone at times. In this case you’d be cared for by your bonded alternative, they would provide for you and protect you if needed. As far as physical things go, most alternatives are into physical contact, but things can get rough between a tiny human and their much larger companion, so many stop at just a bond. If a human does choose to take it to the next level, their alternative better be damn gentle! They would need to physically restrain themselves from hurting their human at first, it’s simply instinct for them to get wild at first during the mating process, and just a human can’t get them off most the time, hello size difference...unless they are skilled at that. It’s impossible for either to reproduce this way, so it’s more of just a bond thing, as sex is intended besides reproduction. This type of relationship is rare, but it’s not that impossible either, it’s just painful sometimes.

this is amazing... and a car needs love and care.. and seeing how they live in your world.. they could do with affection and love from their owners.. not abuse... they have feelings. I can imagine the bond with a car and human is a strong one if the human cars for and loves their car
Your shoes would be destroyed in a matter of seconds, they have large sharp teeths. However, not many of them typically enjoy chewing on random things, they prefer actual food over random objects. But if they are mad or trapped/held down by something they won’t hold back on wrecking havoc with with their sharp teeth and powerful jaws.
To be honest, there isn’t much you can do against one of these alternatives, especially if they are in the mood. You best hope they know how to be gentle.
This goes along with what I’ve said earlier about alternative/human relationships. It either won’t work out or boundaries are established and your alternative friend understands how to treat you in a non harmful way. I’m saying that because their emotions can become very powerful and it can be hard for them to control themselves especially when it comes to being too rough during any activities that cause sexual arousal.

I finally got the time to read this in full detail and I must say it’s super interesting! Really like the thought and detail put into this (well let’s be honest, reading anyone’s lore is always fun :D). The idea of panels to cover up their mouths, etc is pretty interesting, I also like how you explained how the development of sentient vehicles affected how humans and them interact with each other and all the social issues it brought.
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more of your content! ^^
