Don't worry, 5e is great for newcomers.
Now, damage-wise, there's a few things you should know. Clerics have *all* of there spells available. You simply prepare several for the day at a long rest. This makes you highly versatile.
Now, I highly recommend 'Toll the Dead' for a cantrip. 1d8 Necrotic, but 1d12 if the target has taken *any* damage.
Inflict Wounds is great if you're gonna get up into melee, and Guiding Bolt is just...insanely good. Ranged, high damage, and marks the target for an attack with advantage (roll 2 attacks, higher roll is used).
Both of these spells are available as 1st Level spells.
Now, for a couple healing tips. Healing Word is ranged and a bonus action, meaning you can heal and still attack or cast a cantrip in the same turn. Cure Wounds is your bread and butter healing spell, should you take it.
I don't want to spoil everything, but there's a few tips to help you out!
(Note: Toll the Dead is from the book 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything', so your DM may not let you use it. It's still a good idea to bring it up, incase you can use it.)

No prob! I'm glad to help!
You'll be a bit squishy as a Cleric, but your AC should make up for that, since you can have medium armor and a shield.
Seriously, though, don't underestimate the power of Inflict Wounds (3d10 Necrotic, Melee) and Guiding Bolt (4d6 Radiant, Ranged).
One more recommendation. Well, two, actually. Guidance and Resistance. Both give a bonus 1d4 to a roll. Guidance is for checks (such as attacking or skill checks) and Resistance is for saves (dodging and such).
Also, there should be something about an expanded spell list under your domain? Yeah, those spells are *always* prepared for you. Some can be spells that aren't even for Cleric, iirc.

daww yush, really lookin' forward to it there cx
and ah yeah! apparently i can get heavy armor from picking the life domain, so with shield it gets a total of 18 AC too. hopefully i'll be pretty capable when fights happen early on, esp with those combat spells
and ooo yes, that sounds helpful! will look into those for cantrips o: and will look into expanded spell lists too, that all sounds like good stuffs~

Yeah, Clerics are *very* strong. The only weak thing is that your Channel Divinity abilities have very little charges.
And, yeah, I believe you can start with chainmail! You can actually be a frontliner, should you want.
Good luck with your game! I hope it ends up being a ton of fun~
Edit: One last tip, since you said you were new. Components are only required if you do not have a spellcasting focus/components pouch (holy symbol for you), or if they have a cost (Say, a Diamond worth 300gp.) They are also not consumed unless the description says so. Also, alignment...really is just for RP. It's basically 'guidelines' for your character's RP. And lawful does not just mean 'following the law', it can also mean 'following one's code or a code of honor' and such. As long as you don't play stupid, you should be able to do a lot!
