Before she became a researcher of chimpanzee behavior, Jane Goodall observed hyenas. She wrote that she never did see them mating. One older hyena matriarch would flagrantly allow males to court her where Goodall could see her, but then, when things got serious, would lead her mate off into the dense thickets. "She even gave me a look back over her shoulder, as if mocking me," Goodall complained.
So hyenas prefer privacy, apparently.
