A potential poster for a project I'm involved in.
Input is appreciated... as well as support for this project.
((Sidenote, the furhabitat site has no forum or anything like that, yet... so for now all discussious and whatnot happens in our furry4life group.))
Addendum: http://furry4life.ning.com/profiles.....-habitat-intro
Might explain more about the project... and I hope it is free to read.

And both those site are a part of the "ning network"... Registration is free, and painless, but... shouldn't be neccesary to look at that group :S
But yes, so far there isn't much information on either page about the project... we must get a homepage where we can write it all down.

You do realize this will probably NEVER work unless you get some serious management, staff, and be able to buy a sizable piece of land away from most normal human beings, correct? With the community, something this big could end in disaster, not to mention locals would be fond of all the yiffy, murry-purry attitude around the complex.
But if you can manage it, good on ya~
But if you can manage it, good on ya~
Well... at the last count, there were 5 furs that are dead serious about making this project real, including me, because we want to get away from the prejudice and get closer to other furs.
((Others just tagging along because they think it's a nifty idea))
For now, we haven't set ANYTHING in stone... but the "yiffy, murry-purry attitude" will be kept behind walls <.<
This project will be planned and executed carefully and slowly.

You can only control others so much, but if you can manage it it would be pretty interesting. I'm sure no matter where you go, however, you will find prejudice, even more so if you make a concentration of the "offending" attitude in a specific place.
Speaking of which, I am curious as to what you've planned so far. Have you guys found a possible location? Do you have specific rules for the complex? Age restrictions, pet restrictions, and such things? Also, who would be the main Manager of the complex?

Prejudice is impossible to escape, but would be good if it'd be possible to do :P
But, we have a small hope that we're going to become furries good face outwards with it.
So far, we're debating over a "general area" to be in... ((So far it seems like most members want a rural area)) but no definite area.
Rules... let's see... All ages, all species (inc humans), and pet's would be allowed I think? There's the small issue of allergies though <.<
And I hope I'd evade the position as main manager. So far, my status in this project is as "temporary treasurer" (due to my previous experiences in that area, but I don't want to be the treasurer with the planned amount of money circulating)...

Hmm, so far it all sounds a bit vague, but I'd say it is a start. Rural I believe is a good choice for this kind of things. May want to consider a slightly unpopulated region, with lots of space, like Arkansas, though that would likely be too cold. Not entirely sure which geographic area would be best for this sort of thing, but definitely something to look into.
I think it would be best to keep this sort of thing a bit undercover till you have the whole plan figured out. Maybe look for Staff Members and donors, or make some kind of fund-raiser. Also, keep it as serious and SPECIALLY as realistic as possible. Hoping others will accept furries is truly a hopeless dream, so I wouldn't make it public at all. If what you are trying to do is create a private community do so. But if you are looking to make a community of furries that is known by the norm, you may want to rethink your objective.

*nods* all in due time... we are in no rush for this. ((Climate is a future question when deciding where... now we're gathering votes for rural/suburban/city))
Well... we aren't going to go to the nearest broadcasting site and publicly announce it to the world. If we decide to do so, at least not before we've got it stabilized and secure.
And we're not going to go at it until everything is sorted out properly, and we've gotten the funds to do it properly. ((As of now, the plan is that the major part of the funds will be from donations from the members, and the rest from banks, hopefully.))
The community will be known by the few "neighbors" we'll have there... but if they get a positive view of us, the word will spread. ;)

co-op housing, yiffy scritches edition
when asked why the bathroom hasn't been cleaned for a month, jimmy tigerbarb said that don "cuffboi" rottweiler promised to do it in exchange for going on top that one night
however, don also apparently signed away the task to mickey stretchum, who wanted to try using all five plugs on don at once
additionally, mickey had made a deal with billy biohazard; unfortunately, billy didn't hand the job off to anybody else before fleeing the complex upon the discovery that he had given everybody else a nasty case of the h.i.v.
in retrospect, it was surprising that nobody took a hint from billy's nickname in the first place
never a dull moment, is there

This will end badly and provide much lulz for the interwebs.
You're basically offering accommodation to a bunch of people with a reputation for being socially defunct and with a higher level of naivety / mental problems and with no formal support structure or training expect them all to get along. Most of them who are lazy and undersexed to a point of obsetion and expect them to be capable of living together?
I think this is doomed to fail.

Think whatever you want, sir/ma'am...
Now, some corrections...
First... no pay no stay. ((The rent will be low though, but still... can't get a job, can't stay here.)) And that takes care of quite a few minor problems with people.
Second... we take this project seriously and won't rush things.
It's been debated back and forth now for half a year... and we still haven't decided on a general area even.
Doom is far away.

Murr... It will get started... but for now we need more people helping, than being "dead weight", or it will take many years before realization.
I'm dead serious about making this project real, and wouldn't mind donating thousands of dollars if it might help... but for now it's a lot of planning and decisions being done.

Some advice for making a poster:
Background:
If you want to have a flat color background, than leave it that way, don't ruin it with some muddy gradient. Gradients are ugly and distracting, and in advertising it's best to just not use them unless you actually know how to. If you want to go with something else for your background, than commit to that, but I would advise for something like this to just use a soft and solid background color.
Picture:
That picture is a horrible choice. It's grainy, tilted, and blurry. All of these are easy fixes in photoshop and you should take the time to sharpen it up and tilt it so it's straight.
Text:
The text is to big, and it comes to close to touching the borders without actually intending to look that way, it looks noisy. Change your font type to something more solid and keep consistent with that one font, except for maybe the title. Make you link text smaller so it fits on one line and the same color as the rest of the text.
What I would personally do:
Grab a GOOD QUALITY camera, find a field somewhere in your state, put one or two furries in a fursuit and go snap some interesting pictures. It would look good to have them in one of the bottom corners walking together, or jumping happily, or something, with the sky taking up most of the picture, than you have a very good eye catcher image to use for the ENTIRE POSTER and you can use the sky area to place your text. Make your title large and interesting to help catch attention and than the rest of the text small and neat so it's easy to read and not an eyesore. Place the furry life logo in the bottom so the cut off isn't distracting. Use only one link, the shorter one, so it's easy to remember and not intimidating because right now it looks like one HUGE link.
Most of all, if you're really serious about this, I would hire a graphic designer, because it would help a lot :)

Background: This current background was a minor mistake on my part, that got approved by friends.
I was experimenting with gradients there, and made this square wobbly thing around the image. Looked neat to me... but dunno.
Picture: Grainy? Tilted? Blurry? Sorry... don't see those... but then again, I'm not that into photo editing. ((Only know how to use MS paint and GIMP.
Text: Too big? It's supposed to be big, to catch attention on a distance when I put them up as posters downtown... so sorry mate. (Font: I'm using Arial, in various ways... because I am lazy and haven't really searched for any other font there yet. Link text, will keep in mind for next edit.)
Your way
Good quality cam check
wide open fields check
furries huston, we have a problem
Sorry... but I live in Europe, Sweden... and the only other furs I know live in the US... so I can't shoot any furry pictures here.
Shorter link not really good at the moment... but we'll get a real web-page in the future...
Either that, or ask around on the group for anyone who can do a better job.
This is just a school-project that I dedicated to the habitat. Nothing "too" serious but a start in the right direction.

You honestly can't see that the photo is blurry and tilted? Are you blind? That photo is an eyesore and if you just sharpen it and turn it slightly it would make the whole thing better.
Yes, some text is supposed to be large to catch attention, but having ALL the text large is distracting and annoying and will just make people want to look away. Your title should be large and interesting but the rest should be neat and easy to read. Not everything on a poster is made to catch attention, just a couple things to draw a looker in, and the rest is for information.
Don't have furries? Fine, get a friend or two together and go somewhere to take the photos. Don't have fursuits? Fine, go invest in some cat girl ears or something, anything that would call out, and take the photo. Use your imagination. Besides, if you have a lot of people working on this project it shouldn't be hard to call out to one of them and ask them to take it.
Sometimes it's hard to see the flaws in our own work, that is why people call out for critique. You asked for advice on this, and as a graphic designer I am giving you that advice. You can take it or leave it, but don't ask for advice if you aren't going to do anything about it or don't want to listen to it :)

Nope... I'm not blind... but I'm having trouble seeing stuff like that. ((I'm not visually impaired either, but I was born without an artistic sense so...))
And I think I've found something to do about the "grainyness" about the picture... Look at the original and see if it's as grainy (link is in info) because I had to shrink it down from 2100 something width <.<
The lower half might be a little big-fonted, yes.... but what else should I do to fill out that space?
Don't have furries, don't have friends...
Why do you think I'm here looking for improvements
But sure... I guess I could mail the group for people willing to "sacrifice some time" to shoot some pictures for us. (last count, 6 of 80 members active, and it seems I'm the only one pushing ahead <.<)
*nods* agreed.
Oooh... you were a graphical designer... neato
I listen and learn... but I want more data before I change.

Ok just gonna say, I'm going to school for advertising (Graphic Communications with my primary focus on the advertising side anyway) and no offense, but everything WereBlood said was correct. Using a gradient for a background like that is a sure way to guarantee that no one will take you seriously, as are sans-serif fonts in general. Not to mention the fact that posters are meant to draw the focus to one main thing, and there is no main focus here. The eye is drawn to the picture because it's such low-quality. Bad lighting, and horribly cropped.
Ok, I've barely[/i] started the photography portion of my course, and look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/480990.....07/4409604354/
It really takes little effort to come up with a picture of that quality. It wasn't even using a high-quality camera. I hope for your sake this is a mock-up and not what you're actually going to be posting to places.

Sans-serifs is fonts like Comic Sans, that doesn't have the little accents coming from the ends of each letter. Times New Roman would be a serif font, and serif fonts are generally more professional. I wasn't so much complaining as pointing out things to improve on if/when you actually get down to pitching this idea to people you'd need to make this happen.
When I first made it, I used Arial for "headline"... my teacher complained*.
Then I change the font to "Times new roman"... my teacher complained*.
Finally, I changed to the current font... he approved.
* = He complained that it looked too "blocky" and doesn't look good when going to use it on a poster.

Wereblood is right about the photo. There are plenty of photographers here - try asking some to use their photos for the project and see what they say. The higher quality, the better. You want it to look professional to gain proper interest - and remember your opinion is NOT the one that matters, but the opinion of the community you're trying to reach. You can find a happy medium between what you can do visually with the poster and what will draw in furs for the community. Also, STATE it is a community somewhere closer to "the beginning" of the poster, since so many people are asking what it is, that is clearly a sign the poster is not doing its job - to inform people what it is.
And I agree about the font/text - remember if you ever get these print there will be cropping and it will cut off some of the text if it remains as it is. Also, the background color is far too dark for the text to be the focus. Also look up poster printing sizes or atleast work at standard paper size - if you print them yourself keep in mind how much color ink you will use. Green is a nice color, but this one is too heavy and yes please loose the gradient, it looks awkward.
Test or not, the more serious you are about the promotional material, the more real interest will be generated.

I'll look around for more photos, as so many people seems to HATE the one I randomly bumped into.
It does have the word "habitat" in it, which was the main reason why I chose it.
Well... it does say "work in progress" there.
A4 is 2480x3508... the original image is 2368x3543... (( somehow, somewhere, I altered the image? I based it on A4 format though ))
Unfortunately, the site auto-resize it if I'd upload it original size <.<
What other colour should I use then?
Popular vote in my small testgroup (the few I could reach) all said green so, green it was. (( and they all approved of the gradient, hence why it was there when uploaded <.< ))

It's mainly so furs can get away from being threatened and whatnot... or just to live near other furs.
And for now, we aren't planning "town wise", max a smaller apartment complex or the like... just so we have someplace to start.
And it's not "furs only"... we're going to include non-furs and pets too... as long as the "pets" in question isn't furs with a fetish... which then would be counted as furs.
Sure, furs would get benefits... but we wouldn't exclude other people in need.

You're seriously saying if you knew someone was engaging in bestiality that you'd do nothing? I hope to god for your sake there are no Good Samaritan laws where you are.
Doing nothing is not always the best course of action. Just keep the animals you're condemning to psychological abuse in mind.
Doing nothing is not always the best course of action. Just keep the animals you're condemning to psychological abuse in mind.
Considering bestiality is illegal in most if not all states, Its extremely irresponsible management that you wouldn't think it'd be worth ''interfering with''.
Who in their right minds, trying to establish a fully functioning community of any kind wouldn't think to do everything in their power to prevent something that could get them and their residents in some serious trouble. Your residents for partaking in the act, and you for knowingly letting it go on, if you did in the first place.

I dunno what Alex intentions was with above conversation.... but I assure you all... if I, or anyone else in the habitat, would hear of bestiality... they'd be kicked out ASAP.
But at the same time, I doubt we wouldn't allow pets in the habitat.
Likewise with unannounced raids of pet-owners homes to check for bestiality.

You know that people only have "prejudice" (using your wording here) against furries because they take furry entirely too seriously, right? And all that I see here is taking furry even more seriously.
But okay, if you're determined to make this work then you should at least get a poster that doesn't offend the eyes. Let's work on that.
BACKGROUND
Your background is entirely too bright and saturated, with visible banding. It is easily the worst (and most easily fixable) thing about this poster. I know playing with the gradient tools is fun when you first get photoshop, but, like lens flare over-use, it looks really bad to everyone else. You want a neutral, desaturated color that won't steal the focus from the message, and it should be either flat color or in a pleasing, low-contrast pattern or graphic.
GRAPHICS
I don't know of "furry4life", but is that their actual logo? It's on the verge of horrifying. I suppose you can't change that though. The way it's cut off on the bottom arbitrarily does not work. Put it in a top header with a line that makes the cutoff make sense or something, or make it part of a compound logo with the bottom part being a logo for this retreat thing.
The main photo... not good. It's blurry, it's tilted, and the subject looks like it wants to rape my family. I would shy away from the odd cropping, it looks very amateur and distracts. I would honestly just scrap the photo and retake a new one, preferably with a better camera. It's nice that it's centrally located in the poster, but the horizontal alignment is off.
TEXT
aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh
Please please PLEASE change the font of the main title. I have to admit that I'm not a font guy, but I know bad when I see bad. The inconsistent spacing and everything else of the bottom text looks very unprofessional. You want a unified theme.
CONTENT
It hints on what the project is about, but it remains vague and leaves me extremely skeptical. It's good to have links for more information, but they need to be a little more memorable. And don't put them in blue text as if they were trying to be hyperlinks, it's a very silly thing to do. They should be part of the unified font theme.
Got a long way to go. I don't agree with the project, myself, but I'd at least like to see it have a decent public face.

BACKGROUND
Photoshop? Sorry... using GIMP, dunno photoshop.
But sure... I will change it... Which colour would you like instead?
GRAPHICS
That's their public logo. I just "masked" out the background there, leaving the characters intact.
I will see if I might do something about the cutoff... It's like that in the original, and our own logo doesn't exits at the moment.
Sorry about the photo, I don't see stuff like that. I'll remove it in the update and add a placeholder instead.
The mask was better than using a completely square picture, at least. I'll try and see if I might improve it somehow.
TEXT
Murr... got complaints about the font when I used Times New Roman at the start, from my teacher (saying it was too blocky), but he OK-ed this font instead. <.<
Inconsistent spacing? What you mean?
List of fonts, top to bottom is: Harlow Solid Italic, Italic Semi-Expanded; (Arial); Arial; Arial Bold; Arial Bold Condensed; Arial; Arial Rounded MT Bold. Only thing I changed among the bottom texts is Colour and Fonts.
CONTENT
Err... As of now, there is nothing definite to put down about the project, but the main goal.
Easily memorable homepage is not done yet, but is being discussed. Blue text was mainly to differentiate them from the rest of the text, and why blue? Because it seemed appropriate at time of creation.
I'm definitely not the right person to do this for our group... but it was a part of my schoolwork so I thought "why not".
The final public face will be done by someone more talented than me, but at least this is a start.

Your list of fonts is the problem with your text issues. Ideally you should have only one or two fonts used throughout the entire thing - that's what I mean by a unified theme. And Arial Bold Condensed will have different spacing than Arial, for example. It tends to look very thrown-together.
As far as I see it, it's just two fonts alltogether.
Arial and that headline font.
All I did was apply bold/italics/whatnot to the Arial font, to shift the aspect of it.
((And condensed was used because in ordinary text it would be too long to fit in one line, and there was no "natural newline" to be put.))

Habitat is a planning forum designed to bring furs together in planning a living community where we can all live together as one. Much like a large apartment complex or gated community. It was brought about because I have seen so many furs saying they are losing their homes due to unemployment or other situations. Habitat is a LARGE idea to help try to remedy all that.

While I do like wildlife restoration projects, I will be honest in saying that I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I saw this.
If you would all like to know why I threw up in my mouth, it has to do with this.

... okay... now that was... odd... and seemed painful.
... How on earth did you manage to end up on that site?
It's not exactly a small spelling-error.

I agree. Dont change it. Its the only thing about this whole idea that makes a lick of sence. The idea of 5 ''dead serious'' furries buying out a whole community is absolutely absurd (of course there might be more of you actively involved, but for now lets stick with 5).
I doubt anyone will move out of their homes for some socially deformed nisbits so Ill have to assume you guys are planning to have your community-oh I mean ''habitat'' built somewhere..and please tell me you arent serious about planning this in Alaska

youre going to buy abandoned properties. Youre going to buy A COMMUNITY of abandoned properties...I guess it could happen. Although said properties tend to be abandoned for a reason. No power, no running water, and im sure the buildings will need some serious maintenance/remodeling.
..Come to think of it who has the money in this project? Are you going to borrow it? Do you know how to borrow money from banks/ which banks you should go to? ARE THERE REALLY FIVE FURRIES TRYING TO MAKE A NEIGHBORHOOD? WHY ISNT THIS ON ED?!

Emm... we aren't stupid, so of cource the places need to have power & water and such... the only problem of why they are abandoned are often too old, or in need of serious repairs.
The money is currently none of my buisness... I'm the gal handling our outward appearance for now, as well as all QA's being directed at this.
We are 5 DEDICATED furries, but at least 50 members.
The 5 of us are the ones putting in the most effort... and would very much welcome some help with this.

More to the point. The poster looks good but i will chime in my 2 cents worth.
The idea of a furry commune is not new. Me and Pouchhopper were sticking our paws in the idea a long time ago, spacifically looking into buying an abandon town.
Several issues arose which created a kink in the plan.
First, the people directyly involved would need to be responsible and have an absolutely squeaky clean past. Every little rumor or tiny little demon would be amplified 10 fold. Not by furs but by the media. this would be a huge responsibility. Reguardless of a persons past they would have to make a responsible decision about this and who they put in charge if they were truely serious about this.
Second and most prohibitive, funding would be an issue. You need a corporate structure in order to raise the level of funds needed and likely some investors who held a personal interest in making this happen. Angel investors are great however the level of paperwork and accounting needed, let alone the federal interface that would be required for someone to handle the tax information (even if non profit) is not something most furs can fatom. This is by far the most painful step.
There is also the matter of sustaining the community. Everyone would want to help those in need, but to be honest, there arent alot of furs out there with the type of reliable history to be able to pay the costs it would take to keep this running. Its not a stab at the furry community in any way mind you, I love my family and i'd give anything for them.
Theres quite a bit to it, I got rather deep in the process before pouch passed. Its soemthing that is possible, but not probable. This has been the dream of many communities for decades if not more, but what ends up happening is they purchase a house in the middle of nowhere and have a bunch of guest cabins built to house everyone, which just makes them look like a creapy cult.

Well... to adress the "problems"...
1st: We don't judge solely based on records... but we will think about trying to keep the councils free of convicts :-P
2nd: The first funds will come straight from donations or banks... but later on from shops run by the same people living in the habitat. Meaning, we won't only provide a place to stay, but also work opportunities.
3rd: emm... I think no.2 dealt with most of that...
4th? So far, the plan is to buy a prebuilt location, either an appartment complex or a deserted small town, and then expand from there.
For now, nothing is completely set in stone... but we have a general direction at least.
Oh, and thanks for the praise of my poster, although many won't agree <.<
... and you are also very welcome to join the group and help, seeing you have some previous experience/thoughts about this.

Wait a minute you arent even sure who youre getting the money from? And who are the donations coming from your mothers?? Nothing is set in stone because you 5 have no idea what youre doing it seems. But let me help by telling you guys why its difficult to take any of this seriously.
1. Alexxx the moron who was talking earlier (The guy who'd knowingly let bestiality go on it seems. I advise you take Rainhoppers advice into consideration and KICK HIM OFF THE PROJECT)
2. You post your idea on FA before anything is set in stone.
and 3 what everyone has been telling he 5 of you BUT Ill give my version more flavor. YOUR POSTER SUCKS.

The donations comes from other furs in the project.
It's not set in stone because if it's set in stone it will be hard to change. For example, where we are planning this at... might help if it'd be changeable, for new laws being passed.
1. I'd love to kick him off the project and my life... but it's going slow. It's hard enough living with him 24/7, watching him deciding my life the way he wants to live it.
2. I posted this poster as one way of spreading the word, and getting opinions on it... after all, I'm the one in charge off all that.
3. Thank you, comment noted. New poster is in the works, and has been a while now. Am still looking for a good center image to use, as well as developing a good graphical design for all this.
It's hard being the only dedicated fur that does all this by hand.
Too bad I wasn't alone in all this, because then I could just pick something I though was nice, and stick with it.

Nothing's wrong with being in charge of things... It's just... it's too much for me to get up right now.
I'm building a site (using notepad, mind you) while going through different layouts and pictures for the poster... and then I haven't even got a basic colourscheme to follow >.<
Starting up a FA page amids all that, no... I prefer not to right now.
Besides, what good would it serve?
And Chissy... why didn't you just make a new comment for this?

didnt think it mattered either way whether or not that I did.
So wouldn't it be more practical if I ran the FA thing then? it would be more delegation and less for you to do! i dont think LP would mind. Paws is a friend of mine and said i could so long as you weren't! He said he would talk to you to make sure you weren't doing it! ^.^
