I hadn't been talking about the lines, but thank you for the explanation. The yardarm is a piece of rigging (specifically horizontal spars) that the square sails are attached to - in your picture those would be the three rectangular sails stacked on top of one another along the mast.

And in order to catch the wind properly they are placed ahead of the mast, instead of behind it, so that the sails had room to billow.
