The Templar's Rose (In color!)
My latest obsession inbetween preps for FWA has been Dragon Age: Origins. I tend to multitask and play little bits of it whilst I do crafty projects and badges and suchlike. Like many games from Bioware, you can develop a romance with some of the other characters, and my noble rogue ended up hitting things off with a character named Alistair.
Alistair happens to be a near dead ringer for my husband, Uriel, were one to wind the clock back a decade. Plus he's a holy knight templar, which fits Uriel's own holy vocation. He's sarcastic and funny and yet a little innocent. All in all an adorable little fellow that I can't help but love.
The clincher is that if he likes you in return, one of the first things he does is give you a rose as a token of affection, saying how it reminds him of you. Uriel was one of the first men to ever give me roses, at one point stuffing an envelope full of petals with a small note that read simply, "Beauty deserves adoration". So after that I was all his.
So given all of that, I had to draw a picture of us together as we'd look in the game. (Unless you clad yourself in full plate, the female armor isn't terribly protective, typical fantasy game!) So here's Uriel nervously offering Gen a rose.
Markers, colored pencils, turpentine to blend the pencils, and a bit of gelpen here and there to bring the hilights out. Lineart moved to scraps.

Okay this is just beyond cute.
Hey when did you become a FULL redhead??
Is Uriel always so chivalrous?
I have to say Simone envies you on how romantic he is to you. SHe reads this and says, "how come you don't leave me little notes?" My response normally is, "Cause you always complain that you cannot read my handwriting."
It is true! I send her flowers! But I have to say he is an uber romantic and that is rare. Ya best hang on to him cause others will steal him away!!
Hugs, Great job, Gen.

Mostly I'm stubborn, and the most common reason people give me for not reading a webcomic anymore is that they stopped updating regularly. This made my stubborn streak flare up even more.
If I ever miss an update, I'm probably unconscious in a ditch somewhere ;)

I know they make these games for guys with the fighting and such, but honestly all the social options make me think they're REEEEALLY trying to hook women in. This is the scene that inspired the image (with the more sarcastic and silly replies picked) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgw2CTXbdU8
This is a great piece of work, Gen! Total +fav.
I love the way your pose just melts backward into him. And though he looks a bit nervous and shy about giving the rose, there is a certain coy-ness about him as well, as if to say, "Yes, I'm feeling nervous about this, but I'm not complaining about the adoration in return..."

Oh no, it's just an RPG from Bioware. http://www.ea.com/games/dragon-age-origins
It has its slow moments, and there's lots of combat inbetween romancing and chit-chatting, but it's still an extremely fun game. I still play it a little every couple of days even though I've beaten it several times now.

I think we shock people sometimes with it. After thirteen years we still love one another to bits, and he still brings me roses from time to time.
While at a convention a month ago he had called to see how I was doing while I had some folks at the table. At the end of the conversation I cood 'I love youuuuu" into the phone and Uriel got to hear a chorus of people going "DAWWWWWWWWW!"
We're not perfect, mind you. But we love one another and that gets us through the rough spots.
