Roma Termini is the main train station in Rome and the biggest in Italy by number of tracks: 32 (from 1 to 29, plus 1 Est, 2 Est and 20 bis). In Europe only Paris-Nord station has more (44). The station was built in 1939, by replacing the previous 1862 building. Of the original project, only the side buildings, the control tower and the huge water tanks were built. Construction works were then stopped by the outbreak of the WWII. After the war the project was changed and a new front building was built with a huge canopy above the front entrances. In the station underground area a shopping mall was added, in the area connecting with the Metro stations. Recently 2 new structures have been built above the tracks. The 1st (pictured) above the bumpers to provide services to the travellers, the 2nd near the platform ends to be used as a car park. This last was built with the tracks underneath fully working, with a launching bridge system.
