Livestreamed commission for
messymrtaylor, here we see his OC MavenCash out for a morning workout, has found a sloppy mud puddle, and was overcome by a desire to trot right through it, making a mess of his hoof-adapted sneakers and much of the rest of him as well. Horses (well, most domesticated ungulates) plus rain-soaked ground mean mud, and lots of it. No doubt many other horses have trotted through this spot to make it such a messy stretch.
Technical:
I gotta admit, I had more than my share of trepidation going into this. As you can see, MavenCash is an MLP-derived unicorn stallion, and I've never drawn any MLP character before. While I did have two of my OC's shown wearing pony pins (VectorStyle Tina and VectorStyle Tanya, they were silhouettes only--I never added the rest of the details. So this was uncharted territory for me. To begin, I hurriedly looked up some pony bases and a GIF of a trotting horse, which I plugged into Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 (which has a gif animator function...that I've never used in this ancient Win98-era application). After futzing around with its cropping and offset functions--on the livestream, no less--I managed to isolate a suitable frame and proceeded to paste it, an existing pic of Maven and an MLP stallion base on the side as references. What I aimed at wasn't exactly an on-model style MLP character, but close enough that their simplified anatomy proved more than useful though I did derive the stick-figure from the gif, shortening it for this character. The rest proceeded surprisingly smoothly despite my lack of experience with quadrupeds, and once the character was complete I added the mud effects on a separate layer (all of which had to be filled in so as to hide the linework they sat over). Being an unfamiliar character of unfamiliar anatomical layout, I was sure this would have taken up a lot of time, but Krita's project log says otherwise, clocking in at a little less than an hour-and-a-half start to finish.
Digital drawing performed in Krita 4.2.8. Ten layers, 193MB in-app, 7.02MB .KRA file. about 1:20 minutes editing time from test sketches to final image. Project ID: 476.....and my 777th submission.
