Here is a part copy of the Guppy three view given to me by Mark and Tom Sorrell back in the early 80s. Sadly I never got to meet Hobi their father, and designer of little airplane. To be honest I fell in love with the design back in the day. Yes I have a soft spot for negative stagger biplane. The Beech Model 17 and Sorrell Hiperbipe come to mind. The later SNS-8 and SNS-9 Hiperlites also come to mind, they are both sweet flying aircraft.
Seeing how I have a set of Guppy plans what could be done to make it two seat and a little more like a Beech 17?
First widen the cabin to about 42 to 45 inches for room for people and structure.
Next add wing area to help carry the added weight.
Next add horsepower to help move the addes weight and drag. How much power to add to get good over all proforance?
Next reprofile the fuselage so it looks more Beech 17 ish
As I play with the design I'm going to keep in mind some of Hobi's other designs and what he might have done if he knew what I know about airfoils and wingtip vortices.
Hey it if you want to see a big biplane look up Dean Wilson Eagle aircraft. They are so graceful in the air while doing crop dusting.
You know I think this needs some color... camo comes to mind...
Blessings all be safe out there.

Love the Staggerwing! My late father used to doodle those while on the phone with his customers - he was in sales and had his office at home. Desk blotter and note pads had probably a squadron of those planes at times. He said it was his fave plane as a kid - he was born in 1930. His first time in a plane was in 1936 - his great aunt took him on a half hour excursion flight on a Ford Tri Motor - something the early airlines used to do to drum up business.
I first thought that the Sci Fi Author Keith Laumer had a hand in designing this aircraft, but he actually designed several "Deep Bellied" model aircraft that looked similar.

Not quite a Staggerwing, I know, but close.

This was Hobi's design from the start the SNS-2 was an improvement on the SNS-1 that first flew in 1959 as I remember. They built Guppy 5 months, it was Steve Kimble that talked Hobi into letting him drawing up a set of plans for the little bird. I have talked with Steve and got a set of plans for his Dormay Bathtub replica.
