Roadkilled fox skull called Kaishu I did for
taluthus's birthday. I cleaned it up myself and it's the first skull I properly macerated, degreased and bleached. The patterning is done in Indian Ink :D First time I've really tried doing a tribal thing with a skull, had a lot of fun with it in the end. Most of the markings I made up on the spot and whatever felt right, ended up looking pretty good :D
Tal is getting some LED's to put into the skull and a few spots so it lights up nicely, will have to get pictures of it then as well.

Too true! One of the worst thing's I've come across is still living animals :/ It's so heartbreaking, it's pretty obvious people don't pull over to check and just kept going, otherwise you'd think they'd stop and do something.
xP I'm guilty of always watching the roads, for living or dead animals haha

I do try treating everything I get with respect, road killed stuff it's sometimes hard to find usable parts, but what I can salvage I do and I'm starting to make more crafty things out of smaller parts, not just skulls.
Thank you very much, I'm kinda glad that that people can see the effort I put into keeping even the left over parts beautiful :3

This guy I picked up off an express way locally, I got him when he was kinda old, pulled over and put him in the boot. After getting home I cut the head off carefully with a scalpel and put the body out in a corner of a paddock (field) where I could check on it. The head was frozen for a few days to kill off any bugs or parasites. After that the head put in a plastic bag which is put in heated water (Fishtank heater!) and cleaned that way.
I usually clean heads this way because you can catch all the tiny teeth as they fall out into the bag, that way no teeth are lost and the skull remains intact, even if it is damaged at all and the bones come loose :3 If I know the skull is really damaged though I tend to leave it and just put the whole body out in the paddock. Though, that does run the risk of dogs or other foxes dragging bodies away and you can loose everything.
:3 Hopefully that all makes sense - If you have any questions about it at all just ask :D It's an interesting process.

Haha I try avoiding that as much as possible, cut as much as I can with just the scalpel. Around 50% of the time I can get the skull cleanly off the head without too much twisting, but sometimes I cant get between the vertebrae that well. Twisting it off really does suck though, hate doing it lol
Oi, I should totally get you the plastercast my brother made of a fox skull. You could totally make tons of skulls and paint them for sale, then you wouldn't have to worry about whether they're damaged or not! .... then again, I know you, and you're too lazy to make the skulls before painting them. amirite?
I would heartily suggest a couple of white/uncolored LEDs in the cranial cavity, the soft illumination through the skull will be gorgeous!
Oh, protip: if you wanna do that, rub a little fine sandpaper or a nailfile over the LED bulb to make it opaque, helps disperse the light evenly rather than HOSHIT MY HEAD IS FULL OF LAZORS :)

Nice work! Mum would die if I brought home a dead fox and stuck its head in the freezer. Always wanted to collect roadkill and stuff, but I'm not sure I have the grit to clean it up.... can't even cut up the chicken bones for the cats XD
I brought back an interesting skull I found bush bashing in Tasmania. Think it might be wombat. Mum tried to get rid of that too :D
