This was piece done way back in 2004.
Being of a mix of ethnic minorities, many who have- or are- of the same variety will come into a lot of racial slurs, bad stereotypes, and generally plain disrespect at the hands of many others. Many just figure that they are entitled to do as they please, say what they want, and act out at will in regard to ethnicities that are not theirs.
Do they bother to learn about it? No.
Do they bother to invest in the effort to understand culture outside their own? No.
Do they care if what they do is hurtful, taboo, or insulting to the other culture? Also no.
When I did this piece it was after a bad occurrence in my close context, in regards to one of the many ethnicities that make up my "genetic makeup". I took that hurt and went to my work at the NCC (Native Canadian Center of Toronto). It was the 4rth consecutive year of my return from abroad, and I had been steadily integrating in a culture I had left when I moved away some 10 years prior.
They immediately detected a change of composure and inquired what happened. I remember clearly that it was a Wednesday, my Medicine Man was in attendance, and so were some of the Elders- as there was also an event at the NCC that night we were preparing for.
One of the Elder's said:
"It hurts when someone does something like this. Not only does it hurt you and your people, but hurts those bad-talking people more... becuase if anything our people recognize, is that we have so much in common, and so much to learn form one another. Eventually, our lines become one- with marriage and with living on the same land. Sullying a culture, is disgracing oneself more than it is someone else."
Some might say that it wasn't profound, but it's something that made me feel welcomed after such a segregating experience. As per the advice of some of the Elders, I had to let that hurt go somehow- so I, as always, chose my art. And I did a little piece to honor all that that person said- about my "big nose" and my "animal" culture.
And what an animal it is.
"Arieh" in Hebrew means "Lion". There are 12 ways to say "lion" in biblical Hebrew. Each one referring to a different sex, age, type, and temperament for it.
"Judah" was one of the 12 Tribes of Israel (based of the 10 sons of Jacob, plus his 2 adoptive sons from Joseph). Their defining symbol was the Lion. it is from that word "Judah" that the name for the religion "Judaism" was taken.
Done on Scratchboard.

This is just amazing. It's powerful, but very gentle.
He looks like a leader, a teacher, a scholar, and a friend. For a piece born out of the judgment of another, you brought such a feeling of peace to this image it's almost soothing.
I would hang this on my wall with pride if it were a physical possession in my hands.

I thank you DEEPLY for your amazing AMAZING moving words! Your very profound when you comment.. and it's just such a pleasure to me to be able to read it.
You told me a while ago that you can see my spiritualism in my art, and you know- I can see the depth of yours in the comment you leave. Because the things that move you seem to be the spiritual concepts that are deeper than the surface as well.
My mom is the owner of the image- and as you said, she is very proud to be it!

This image is a perfect teacher, in my view, looking at it, i'm in complete awe. It's like all your work i've seen so far, I don't need to know the meaning of the image, I don't need to know the meaning of the words. To find the image beautiful and inspiring.
btw, I love this image so much, this image is my current desktop image on my PC

WOW! Talk about small world eh? We have a local Rabbi who's name is also Arieh as well... and he has a friend named "Cphir" (which means a young/baby lion, not a cub, but not adolescent.. like a "toddler lion" in Hebrew). Arieh always says "don't worry, I'll make this cub into a lion!" in Hebrew.. but ti's a play of "I'll make him grow-up/mature into me!" SO ti's funny with the word play.
Zicharon lo breha, may he rest in piece your Arieh.

It's definitely a very powerful piece. He looks very patient and wise. I really like it. And what you said is true: it's much easier to make fun of stereotypes and so often we do it without realizing it, but we never actually invest the time to learn about the other culture. I try and learn about other cultures through their traditional music. I have a deep interest in folk music from around the world, and I think with that, you can learn a lot.
I agree with you there- the output of cultural art teaches you the core fundamentals of culture. Their implementations as well- as the content and their restrictions shed light on the mentality.
And excuse the somewhat cheesy statement- but I've always loved musicians. For all the "bad wrap" they get, they have been the only so far that I have ever clicked on, on multiple levels. They are always so passionate and just as preserving/conserving in their ways as many artists are.... I don't understand why so many folk have "bad beef" wiht them!

Well, I'm glad that we can click. I hope that you can get as much enjoyment out of my work as I do out of yours.
And musicians get a bit of a bad wrap because these days, too much music is pre-composed. You can sit at a computer with a program open (I've played with several over the years) and click a dozen buttons and *POOF!* you have a new ten-minute trance-hypno-hop-house track that can be mass-marketed to teh whole world and be accepted instantly by millions.
Whereas a composer like me, and an artist like you, it takes a soul to put together what we do. We can't just sit down and mash buttons and produce an output. We labour over pieces because a little of something of us goes into each one.

I can TOTALLY agree with you on this- and I have had DOZENS of "arguments" with people over the production of music and art with the help of digital tools, or just plainly the digital tools doing it for you. I need SOUL into my art. I need the skill, talent, and achievement of the artisan to REFLECT in their music. Is it not more impressive that an individual created this music with their mind, soul and body rather than a computer user who;s knowledge of composition and practical application is non existent- but pushed a button that did it for them?!
I'm bewildered, I admit- when I see those people falling for such mindless drivel.
I think we are clicking VERY well! And I am grateful for this!

Though I only have time to fav and comment on this one pic right now, I look forward to exploring your entire gallery with the respect and awe it so deserves.
This pic is beautifully done. Detail mastery, form, expression and lighting all superb. I find your artwork both sexual and spiritual. An overwhelming combination in my humble opinion.

I am VERY flattered and humbled by your comment! I really think you shower on the praise far to much though.. I aim to teach and saturate my art with a lot of symbolism and meaning, so it's important to me that people take away from it something.
I also admit, that I'm a little surprised you said "Sexual"... as I never aim for that, nor to I indulge that in that kind of content. Especially from this piece which is more a retaliation to ethnic discrimination! Mind if I ask, what do you find sexual about my art? I'm not at all upset by you saying this, but rather intrigued and curious! This is the first time anyone has said that!

I am privileged to discuss my reaction to your artwork with you. It is my pleasure to do so. Mind you my visit to you gallery was very brief, and I commented on my immediate reaction.
The spiritual aspect to your artwork of course is both beautiful and obvious. The sexual aspect more likely just a personal reaction. It struck me mostly with your animal artwork. Which I find powerful and majestic. This to me is alluring to say the least.
It was not my meaning to label your style or artwork in any way. Nor do I think you felt I did. When artwork, or an artist makes an impact on me, I respond. Now after reading the text explaining the artwork, I can see why you were curious. My respect for such issues is unending, especially as I humbly stumble and learn more. I have respect and admiration for what little I know of you and your artwork. And will be eager to explore more and watch with great pleasure. ^^

Hello!
First off, WOW are you very well versed. I odn't get a lot of well articulated comments, and I am enjoying this down to the second!
I didn't think you were labeling my work at all... I was actually pleased to have been considered as "spiritual", and even "sexual". Truly, if I am conveying that majesty with my art, then I am very humbled by that. I am also very delighted in meeting someone who is just as respectful of ethnic culture, and the general appreciation for life. I am very thankful that you voiced your opinion, and hope to hear more from you if you see fit to leave me more comments! I am truly TRULY thank full for the ego boost you have given me. It comes in great time, with great appreciation.
