The stars sprinkled across the night sky as a lone tabaxi kit sat upon the roof of the wagon. His other kin were tucked asleep, unlike the restless kit. His eyes darted around trying to find all the star constellations he had back home. He reminisces of the days when his mother would sing soft lullabies under the starry skies when he was a cub. She pointed to her favorite stars in the night sky which were harder to find now that they were in a new land. It would be the star of their ancestors, the one that would twinkle only in the eyes of the tabaxi to show their ancestors would be with them.
The sky in Middleton was decent…but it didn’t compare to the beautiful sky back home in the jungles. In some regards, Middleton was almost peaceful as night with the star-draped sky, soft candlelit lanterns along the streets, and the distant crashing waves from the piers not too far away. Save for the occasional drunken slurring of humans, halflings, among others, it was a perfect night. If only he had someone to share it with
“Home.” The young spotted tabaxi murmured before giving his wrist a brief lick before rubbing his forehead. “I wonder when we’ll ever go ba-YEOW!!!”
The feline yowled as he felt his tail was briefly tugged almost jumping off the wagon itself. The sensation didn’t hurt as much as startled. As the feline tried to regain his composure, he heard a tiny chuckle as a pair of long sharp green ears were exposed on top of a head that could barely hold them.
“Uugh, you again.” The cat groaned holding the bandaged end of his tail. “Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”
“Said the thieving cat who stole my coins and necklace!!!” The small goblin retorts loudly revealing the bandaged knot on his head. “You deserve it for being a thief and not a good one ei-mmrph.” The goblin continued before a gray furred paw cut off this speech.
“Sshhhh….my kin are sleeping. I’m not allowed to be out at night while the eldest is in.”
“And yet…” The child said with a smug.
“And I’m sure if you keep yelling like that, I’m sure your mother will give you another knot on the head.” The feline teased.
“No, she won’t. She’ll just spank me and-…that’s none of your business!!!”
“Why are you here anyway? You said you didn’t want to see me anymore.” The feline turned away from the goblin to look back at the stars, hold his damaged tail close to him. Their scuffle at the local bakery gotten them in a bit of trouble with the baker and their parents, or in the feline’s case elders. What turned into a brief argument about the best pastries turned into a scuffle that gotten a little violent. He may have scratched the goblin’s face but not before the goblin singed the precious fur on his tail. Now he just hopes he can perform with his kin even if it not at his best. The spotted feline gave a downtrodden sigh at the possibility of not dancing anymore.
The feline was knocked out of his dream-like state when he felt something light hit the back of his head. He let out a low annoyed growl suspecting the annoying goblin threw a piece of trash of him. That was until he smelled hints of cream, honey, sugar. He turned around to see a paper-wrapped package of the sugar-dusted honey cream-filled donut holes. The same ones they argued about.
“Here….I thought you at least deserved this.” The goblin said as he sat next to the spotted feline. The goblin was dressed in a tan-tunic, green pants, and brown sandals. His pair was is tied into a low ponytail. Unlike the usual goblin nose, his was shorter and roundish, almost human-like, similar to his brown irises in his yellow sclera eyes. Those golden eyes were weighted with guilt.
“How long will you be in town?” Rho muttered.
“Bronze said we’ll be here for another two weeks before we leave again.” Silver said, barely remembering what the elder of the troupe told the crew.
“And then…?” The goblin asked with his ears perked up.
“We’ll be back. Bronze said the people are good here and the town is full of supplies. So we may be back as soon as next solstice.”
“Gr- I mean, that’s fine,” Rho responded trying to hold his excitement. “I’m sure you’re dance skills, you’ll be too busy with all the new friends you’ll have.”
The tabaxi kit growled as he laid back on the roof. “If only. I travel too much to make friends. Even then, the other kids think I’m too hairy and weird to be their friend.”
“Me too!!” The little goblin replied with enthusiasm. His eyes shot open seconds after realizing what he said. “I-I-I mean not hairy, no, no...uh I-I mean...ah”
“I get it, green boy.”
“Green boy? The name is Rho, dancing spots.”
“If you paid attention to my performance, you would know I am the one, the only, Silver of the Wi-whoa, whoa!!!” The leopard stood up proclaiming his name before almost slipping off the roof before Rho grabbed him.
“Oof, take it easy spots or you’ll end you’ll be a one-hit wonder.”
“I’m not sp-, nevermind.” The feline pouts.
“Well, I gotta split before my folks notice I’m out.” the little half-goblin said before sliding off the roof. “You’re welcome to visit the bakery for the kid’s special in the mid-morning?”
“Who says I’ll be able to go. I am a very BUSY performer.” Silver exclaimed with prestige.
“Ah well, more cream puffs for me, hehehehe.” Rho giggled with the wide Cheshire grin before running down the stone street before stopping. “You are coming aren’t you? There’ll be kids there. Rho asked softly.
“Yeah, why not. I’ll dance so well, I can get them puffs for free.” Silver gloated.
“Whatever, spots.” Rho rolled his eyes and briefly smiled before running back into town to his home.
Silver purred before eating another cream puff as he tried to find a way to hide it from his troupe. He deserved it, he thought after nailing his first solo dance performance to an adoring crowd. He got into a scuffle but also made a companion too. It was a good day, he thought as he licked his fingers.
He looked up at the stars again and saw one twinkle. The same one Jade told him was her favorite. The stars are their ancestor who always there whenever a tabaxi felt lonely. Whenever one twinkles, it’s an ancestor showing they are watching.
“Thanks, Mom. I love you too”
