An entry for World of Eld's Bestiary! Thought I'd share it here with you all. <3
Veranid are distant relatives of the Caggy. They come in many different shapes and sizes, some with horns, others with none, and fill a role similar to that of the Deer and Elk of earth. Veranid are relatively docile creatures, prefering to avoid contact with predators than fight. However, if cornered their hooves are sharp and can prove nasty as weapons. Veranid live in groups anywhere from a few individuals to thirty herd members. They are mainly herbivorous, browsing on shrubs, low-hanging branches, and grazing grass occasionally. Their beaks are perfectly designed for snipping leaves off branches and the tender tips of grass.
Most Veranid herds consist of one dominant male and his females, though young males may be tolerated if they are related to the Herd. Veranids will instinctively seek out individuals that do not share their genes to mate, so inbreeding is very rare.
Veranid have proven too wild to easily domesticate, and so their herds are instead tracked and monitored closely.
Veranid give birth to live young.
