
This idea is a bit of alternative history : what if some ships-of-the-line (16-18th century) were powered by vertical axis windmills and propellers rather than conventional sails ?
Their main advantage would be the ability to sail in any wind direction, even in reserve. However, the mechanical power transmission would have been complex and difficult to maintain with the technological level of the time.
