This was my double-sided promotional Brochure for my Thesis Film: When Raven Stole the Moon.
The brochure covered some of the process and concepts [art and story] that the film went through.
"When Raven Stole the Moon" is my thesis Animation short that was produced under the watchful tutelage of not only my Animation Mentors, but also Elders and Medicine Man of the culture- both locally and out West.
It took 6 years to produce- form conceptualization to final animated short- all through the while contacting cultural individuals to help with the creation of the film. Authenticity for me is a KEY part/role in the process, and I wanted to make sure everything was perfect and culturally sound- with no treading on any taboos.
The film itself features the music of Olivia Tailfeathers- a lead singer in a WONDERFUL family-group that are local aboriginal. She has released a CD of her music and it is available for purchase.
The vocal was supplied by Jeff Legacy- another Local Aboriginal artist and actor. I had the pleasure of working with him- and he is an amazing professional, as well VERY entertaining! While recording, he even used my Raven plush I had supplied him as his "stand in actor".
The film itself is just under 2 minutes long, and was debuted at the "Sheridan industry day". It also went on to be shown at multiple venues- local pow-wows, events at the NCC, and some venues set up by the aboriginal communities.
To view the film, you will need to get to my site- as FA doesn't have a category or submission for non-flash films.
Go to "animation" on my website and click on Raven's poster.

Wow! I just watched the animation, and it was lovely! Being something of an aspiring animator, I like to consider myself a bit of a buff, and your technique was pretty damn flawless for something(I'm assuming) you did on your own!
I allready love your style and the way you portray aboriginal art, but used practically and in motion it's really fantastic. Thanks for showing it off!

Well, I wouldn't say flawless- I'm well aware of some of the timing mistakes I had done- but as a friend of mine once said: Better look back upon these things with a nostalgic eye, not a critical one. So my next little short will be "perfect"!
I'm glad you liked it! I am very proud of it- the entire concept was worked and worked until we could get it as perfect and authentic as it could be, without stepping on cultural toes. it was one hell of a fun ride! I'm looking forward to doing more!

Yay! I'm so happy people liked it.
I wanted the fins to have the Raven face- symbolic of the Moities that the Orca clan is under, as well as having a good curiosity lead the audience into wondering what IS that thing? It was a good climax. I'm happy it's reflecting that!
Thank you so much for the comment awesome opossum!

wow. just wow. I just watched When Raven stole the moon at least 5 times in a row. That was amazing, and funny as hell with the eagles line.
But really, just a superb piece of animation, I watched your other animations as well. Fox and grapes was my fav out of those. it's almost something I would do.
But back to when Raven stole the Moon
I love the reaction that wolf gave when Raven turned his head to the side and showed the moon in his beak. It went from a "Oh cool, what do you have?" to "Put it back before I make you into a pie.".
*Claps* just spectacular work, and I hope you do much more animations.

Wow wow woo.. ok, you really made me flush with your comment. I admit, while this short makes me proud, it is still one I look upon with a nostalgic eye, and not critical one- becuase i have already grown form it so much that I can pick out mistakes in timing and the like. However, I am so glad that people are enjoying it regardless- and to THAT capacity?! 5 TIMES?!
Wolf was my favorite to animate I must admit- all the hair and secondary action gave me "fun" things to play with.
I just am left speechless by your comment, I cannot thank you enough- I will be pursuing more animation endeavors with a friend of mine that will be pitching in! So we hope to get longer shorts done, or at least do them to a more extent than a solo-film.
Again, I cannot think you enough for your kind KIND words!

Wow, very nice. I love how Raven is portrayed as being almost like a playful child. My favorite part would have to be when he is 'caught' by Eagle, though rather than scold Raven, Eagle convinces him to put the moon back so he can play that game again later. I thought the sound effects overall were done very nicely, espcially for Raven, and espcially at the end when Raven was laughing or otherwise giddy at the prospect of getting to steal the moon again.
I also rather like your other native style artwork...with some obivious bias towards the raven ones

Thank you!
It is within local aboriginal cultural custom that one does not yell, berate, or criticize- especially children- but find a simpler, more diplomatic solution to explain or guide the person who is doing wrong. This is a very big difference to the Western cultures who forcefully implement laws and regulations that are "one size fits all", and prove ineffective in the long run.
Thank you! I put a lot of time and investment in learning the culture form the people themselves- and they did great by teaching me the art and traditions! I am glad people recognize this.
Being bias is all ok... we all have our own!

Something that I took a notice to was the placement of creatures upon the totem poles. Eagle perched upon Orca's fin in the closing sequence, and when all is still and whole again, Raven atop Eagle atop Orca, and Wolf. Its a very nice touch.
On another note, I'm curious as to the programs you used to compile this piece?

WOO! YOU NOTICED!
It's a little touch of "magic"- after all, Raven awakens form the pole to begin with. :)
Programs included: Flip book (Pencil tests and cell compilation) Photoshop (for coloring the cells), After Effects (for final compilation) Pro tools and Adobe Soundbooth (for the sounds FX and editing). :)

Thank you so much for enjoying it! The real thanks, however, should go to all the Elders and Teachers within the community who truly put me through the grueling days/months/years of hard work and labor of learning their culture. They really helped me polish this to a significant cultural representation!
The version I heard wasn't that he was brightly colored- simply that he was white. Truth be told, a lot of contemporary re-tellings change facts about the story as not to appropriate the original content- but it still gets the general message across.
I'm so glad you like my film! I'm ithcing to do another one.. but time. I need more time.

I know XD I'll tell ya' there was a man at a flea market my gran took me to who's store had some pretty nice handmade stuff, and I said 'So, do you have anything related to the Trickster?" There was dead air for about a minute. He finally said....."Er......Yeah?" I looked at him and said deadpan. "Can you show me?" more dead air. "Over....There?" Points at some eagle carvings. I kind of gave him this, 'If you want to sell something from a culture, please LEARN a little bit first' look and walked out.
I know your film was created a while ago, but I just recently had a chance to see it and I love it! Definatley one of the most successful 4th year films I've seen, and definable an inspiration for me as I struggle to complete mine this year. X3 The colours and layouts are gorgeous, and I love how the character designs are true to the style of the native artwork.
