The Time traveler reaches forward and stops the machine. The date is around +251 Million. He turns around, opens the hatch and emerges onto an alien world. The first thing he notices is that it's hot, at least 45°C (113°F). The air feels moist and sticky, like summer in the tropics. Stepping down onto the land, he sees that he's on a beach leading up to rolling hills and a large mountain range. It seems to be mid-evening, around 6:00 pm, at least in his time at least. By now, Earth's day has become over an hour and a half longer than in his time.
He sniffs the air and quickly covers his nose. The air sticks. He looks around and finds the source of the stench. Small, muddy volcanic vents slowly bubbling up methane and sulfur into the air.
The time traveler looks for any kind of jumping fish or birds over the water. Nothing. No flying creatures. No giant monsters lurking under the water. There aren't even any sea urchins or mollusks clinging to the beach. Just the occasional blue-green algae clinging to rocks.
The time traveler looks up. The sky is dark and brown, shrouded in ash. The Sun looks dim and orange from the shrouded sky. But even covered in clouds, the Sun seems brighter. Looking around further, he sees the Moon, through a small hole in the endless sea of dust and smoke. It seems smaller and further away. It doesn't seem quite as close and reachable anymore.
The time traveler looks onto the land. The rolling hills look more living than the ocean, but upon closer look, the vegetation looks simple and repetitive. There are oak and evergreen trees with bamboos and palms scattered between, along with small shrubs and bushes. There is no visible grass or flowers. These plants simply repeat themselves endlessly until it reaches the mountains, with little biodiversity in between. The time traveler feels a little sad, that this is the forests of our future, much less than the magnificent forests on Earth in his time.
He looks around and spots a small, rat-like mammal emerging from the bushes. It looks weak and famished, likely starving from lack of food. It looks up at him and slowly approaches, smelling curiously. It has obviously never seen a human before and thus is more curious than scared. Just then, a massive reptile, similar to a snake, the size of a canoe leaps out of the ground from a small burrow and grabs the rat with its mouth.
The time traveler quickly runs into his machine and starts it up again. Though he can't help but think. What happened to the Earth? Some kind of disaster obviously happened, but what and why?
I have decided to re-name my series about the far future, "After Earth". This one is about the next supercontinent. I will go into more detail about this world in future uploads.
