but I know the feel - a number of years ago my father was taking down the old flagpole at my parents' place.

...he failed, spectacularly, and it fell down onto the roof of their. Lots of tiles, one or two windows... it got expensive, and not in the fun way

This tree was just unreasonable growing so much mass on such a relatively "small" branch (in relative proportion - for a human it's a helluva whole tree all by itself!!!). You should have taught it the basic rules of balance...

lotsa firewood for the cutting heck some of those larger sction could be milled into some nice lumber with a portable sawmill

might I suggest the dead simple ALASKAN MKIII CHAINSAW MILL With a simple chainsaw you can mill your own lumber from any size log

ah well still may be useful to have in case you come acriss any more downed trees
you cam mill them into useful lumber instead of "just" firewood
