Brewery: Ommegang Brewery
Name: Fruittanomyces
Style: Belgian Witbier
Origin: New York
Bottle: 750ml
ABV: 5.3%
Appearance: A pale golden glass of sunshine with a head like you dropped a bar of soap into a jacuzzi(Entertaining but Not recommended or advised).
Pours: I think you can tell from the photo what level of foamy insanity to expect. Another similar beer that is foamier, lighter, and crisper that I’ve had before, and know when I do review it if I can find it again, I will rank it quite highly as well, is the 1809 Berliner Weiss (-which is fun to order as it sounds like you’re asking for some, rare, really old, finely aged and undoubtedly insanely expensive wine). Perhaps there’s some correlation between carbonation output and quality of Wit or Weisse? Perhaps more lively cultures bring about both more gasses and more depth of flavor?
Smell: A dry, light, lively, vibrant and fruity scent cheerfully greets your nose. It lists mango, passionfruit, and kiwi in it’s flavor profile on the bottle label. . The mango I’m not smelling, the passionfruit definitely, and maybe the kiwi though I’d say it’s a little underripe.
Taste: The passionfruit taste comes forward without hesitation in the taste as well with all the good natured intentions of Eek(!) The Cat offering to help(“Cause it never hurts to help!”). I’m also getting some candied lemon peel along with light sprouts and faintly scented flowers. This is an ale best enjoyed on an ideal Spring day with bright, cheerful, optimistic, upbeat pop songs. Sunny Side of the Street, Good Day Sunshine, walking On Sunshine...I think you’re getting the gist of the theme here. I actually forgot it was 27°F outside with snow on the ground.
Mouthfeel: I can feel the tartness pulling on my tongue. It has an almost, pleasantly antiseptic sensation (thankfully not taste!) that leaves your mouth with a clean, fresh, dry feeling save for a bit of aftertaste residue at the bottom.
Rating: 9.19 After the disappointments of my last two beers I was a little twice bitten four times shy with this one But this pup jumped in my lap, wagged it’s tail and eagerly licked my face. Analogously speaking of course.
This will be the last review until the pandemic is declared over by the UN, WHO and CDC, and this bit of solar serendipity has been an absolute delight and positive top note to start this interim of these sessions on.
So until then, keep your glasses tipped.
