Grimmerspace Tales: Insidion
By Stephen Landis
“So, these creatures? What can you tell me about them?” I ask as I sit down across from the Crypto-Monk. The representative from Cabal Fantome was a muscular human male bedecked in strange, cobbled-together technology that seemed to have no real immediate purpose.
He laughed, I raised an eyebrow behind my smart goggles, cutting his laugh short. “Sorry, just can’t get over how silly you look. A bear in a lab coat, who would have thought.”
I shook my head at this. Yes, I was what could be considered an Uplifted Bear Biohacker but if the Cabal wanted me to humor them then this needed to go both ways. “Your opinion is noted but that’s not why we’re here. Tell me about the Insidions.” I reply, jotting down notes that began to appear on my smart goggles.
My contact’s mood immediately changed and he began to give a serious and detailed description of the creatures. As I wrote an abridged version of his account, I thought I saw the air flicker behind him, like a wave of heat on a hot summer day. But when it didn’t repeat I shrugged it off and kept writing. I forgot what prompted me to look away from my contact for a split second but when I turned back to look at him, there it was. A disembodied face hovering inches above and behind my contact, unimaginable malice glimmering in its eyes. It took its gaze off of my contact for a few seconds to give me an unnaturally massive smile, revealing a mouthful of sharp teeth.
Time stood still as the room began to acquire an unnatural chill. My gloved hand began to drift down towards my multi-blaster. Would my weapon even have any effect?
Tim, my contact in the Fantome, was still completely nonchalant and seemingly oblivious to the Insidion that manifested behind him. “You know what the hardest part about hunting Insidions is?” He asked as a smile crossed his face. The creature began to extend one of its clawed hands out of the space between spaces and towards the seated Crypto-Monk.
“What is the hardest part?” I asked, a hairsbreadth away from gambling on whether my weapon would hurt this creature.
“The hardest part after learning to see the Insidions is learning to pretend that you don’t see them.” Tim smiled.
Like that, the Insidion’s expression went from psychotic glee to confused surprise before my contact grabbed the humanoid creature’s arm by the wrist and flipping it over onto its back like it was a child’s toy. Channeling an unknown energy through his armored fist, Tim audibly crushed the Insidion’s face like it was made of paper and the creature’s body vanished in a puff of smoke. So much for an autopsy...
Insatiable Curiosity's Ship Logs
Creature Entry #012
Lifeform Designate: Insidion
Biopsy Report: Unavailable due to the unusual nature of their trans-dimensional physiology. I wouldn’t have even bothered writing this entry if I did not have the attached video available as there is no known way to collect physical evidence to prove this creature exists. The Insidion appears to partially exist in a space between this reality and another one, only fully appearing in this one when they feel the need to interact with it in some way (usually to brutally murder whatever prey they happened to be stalking at the time.)
Threat Analysis: As previously noted, the Insidion is a trans-dimensional being. Making it impossible to see much less harm with conventional weapons unless it has fully manifested into this dimension. Once here however, it apparently can be injured by ordinary means. Cabal Fantome’s technology seems to revolve entirely around solving the two problems related to that strategy. After the… incident described above, the Cabal was generous enough to give us schematics for some of this technology. I have already shared them with the ship’s engineer to see if we can improve upon their designs.
