I've had several jobs like this, getting more experience with animals as I go along. You could probably find a sanctuary or rescue nearby to volunteer at :3 They're pretty common, but some are too small to have the money for advertising, so there could be one right under your nose! ^^
I live in Tennessee, there was some law passed about sanctuaries. I don't know the specifics, but they have to go through a crap ton of legal work to just get in one species let alone others. Last I checked the closest was at least a state away. Trust me I would do work with rescued animals the rest of my life if I could only just fine a place x_x;
